Woman visiting the U.S. is shocked by the high cost of living, exclaiming, ‘How can anyone afford to live here?’

The cost of living has risen dramatically in recent years, making it increasingly difficult for many individuals to purchase even basic necessities. Inflation and economic instability have exacerbated the gap between the privileged and those striving to make ends meet. Vanessa, also known as @wanderonwards on TikTok, just posted a video that wonderfully portrays this anger. Her clip demonstrates how difficult it is to survive in the United States with rising prices.

The video shows Vanessa checking out at Whole Foods after purchasing a single prepackaged meal, sufficient for one adult. However, the price was astonishingly steep. As she reacts in amazement, the audio in her video plays the now-iconic words, “Oh my God.” “I will never recover financially from this.” Her frustration resonated with viewers, many of whom share her concerns about the growing expense of necessities. The film serves as a sharp reminder of the financial difficulties that individuals endure on a daily basis, even when they are simply attempting to put food on the table.

The overlay language in the film questions how individuals manage to live in the United States of America with such high living costs. One supper at Whole Foods, which included two pieces of chicken and a package of veggies, cost her more than $22. The text asks, “How does anyone survive in America?” This costs $22.60 for a package of veggies and two chicken pieces.

According to a Forbes poll article published in August 2023, inflation is one of America’s top worries, as reported by Americans. As we all know, regardless of where you reside, inflation reduces your purchasing power. One would have to pay $98,000 now for the same items that would have cost $75,000 a decade ago, in 2013. While your location in the United States will impact your cost of living and purchasing power, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the typical American earns around $61,900.

People in the comments section were either empathizing with Vanessa or advising her to shop at another grocery store instead of Whole Foods. @katsuspamusubi said, “Next time, hit a terrible salad (no taxes) and select a larger container (tare weight subtracted). Takes off a few dollars.” @jjax83 provided a reality check, stating, “If you’re struggling, the whole paycheck isn’t the place to go.”
