Governor Abbott’s Texas has recently expanded its initiative to transport migrants who cross the Texas-Mexico border to sanctuary cities. In a recent post on X, it was announced that Texas would not only be bussing migrants to Chicago but also flying them there.
This decision comes in the midst of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson expressing frustration over Texas transporting migrants to his city, emphasizing its stretched resources. He stated, “The issue is not just how we respond in the city of Chicago. It’s the fact we have a governor, an elected official in the state of Texas, that is placing families on buses without shoes, cold, wet, tired, hungry, afraid, traumatized, and then they come to the city of Chicago, where we have homelessness, mental health clinics that have been shut down and closed. We have people who are seeking employment. The governor of Texas needs to take a look in the mirror, with the chaos he’s causing for the people of this country.”
Governor Abbott, announcing the expansion of the migrant program, explained, “Sanctuary city Chicago started obstructing and targeting our busing mission. Texas will now expand our operation to include flights to Chicago. Until Biden steps up to secure the border, we will continue to provide overwhelmed Texas border towns with much-needed relief.”

Reactions to Governor Abbott’s announcement varied. Some supported the program, advocating for an increase in the number of buses and flights. Others opposed it, suggesting that it aligned with the pro-illegal immigration agenda. Criticism also came from the left, with concerns about funding priorities, stating, “Defunding schools and not giving teachers raises but you have plenty of money for this. Very pro-life family of you … How do you fly a person without valid TSA identification? Seems like an arrestable offense.”
This expansion of the program follows Governor Abbott signing laws to empower Texas law enforcement in dealing with illegal immigrants and human traffickers. In a post on X, he emphasized the need for Texas to defend its sovereign authority and protect the state through historic laws. Abbott pointed out President Biden’s failure to enforce immigration laws, attributing the increase in illegal border crossings to the elimination of Trump Administration policies. The signed laws aim to curb illegal entry, allocate additional funding for border wall construction, and crack down on human smuggling.
