Comedy and acting icon Bob Newhart faced a heartbreaking loss in April 2023 as he bid farewell to his wife. Known for his legendary roles in iconic series like The Bob Newhart Show, Elf, The Librarian, and The Big Bang Theory, the accomplished American actor is now grappling with widowhood.
In a statement released on Twitter, the family shared the sad news of Ginnie Quinn Newhart’s passing, expressing their profound grief over her extended battle with illness. The statement noted, “We lost our beloved Ginnie Quinn Newhart—wife, mother, and grandmother—on April 23, 2023, after a long battle with illness.” Bob Newhart described her as their rock, and her absence is deeply felt.

Bob Newhart and Ginnie enjoyed a 60-year marriage, originating from a blind date in 1962 orchestrated by their friend and comedy icon Buddy Hackett. The couple officially tied the knot in 1963 and shared a lifelong journey together.
Throughout Bob’s television career, Ginnie stood by his side. He portrayed clinic psychologist Bob Hartley in The Bob Newhart Show from 1972 to 1978 and later assumed the role of innkeeper Dick Loudon in Newhart from 1982 to 1990. Ginnie even contributed to the iconic finale of the Newhart series, where a dream revelation became one of television history’s cherished moments.

Ginnie frequently appeared alongside Bob in shows like the 1970s game show Tattletales. The couple, blessed with four children—Robert, Tim, Jennifer, and Courtney—and grandchildren, shared a life filled with love and partnership.

Reflecting on their marriage, Bob Newhart expressed no regrets but shared a desire to have married Ginnie sooner if financial circumstances had allowed. In 2019, he mentioned, “If I could’ve afforded it, I would’ve gotten married earlier. When my first record came out and hit number one, I didn’t really have anyone to share it with. It would’ve been great if Ginny and I could’ve shared that, but I couldn’t afford to get married.”
