In an astonishing turn of events that seems almost unbelievable, a turtle crashed through the windshield of a moving vehicle in Savannah, Georgia. However, what’s even more incredible is that both occupants of the car, siblings Latonya Lark and Kevin Grant, managed to escape serious injury.
The unusual incident occurred on May 12 while Lark and Grant were running errands in Savannah, traveling northbound on Harry S Truman Parkway. Suddenly, the turtle shattered their windshield, but instead of penetrating through, it became lodged in the glass.
Lark described the heart-stopping moment, recalling, “I thought it was a brick, and I told (my brother), ‘my God, there’s a brick!’” Both siblings were initially stunned and covered in shattered glass before fully grasping what had happened.
Grant, a licensed cosmetologist, shared his reaction, saying, “When the glass broke, the first thing that comes to my mind was just to shield myself. So I was like, you know, turn and cover.”
Lark speculated that the turtle was propelled toward their car by a vehicle ahead of them that had collided with the reptile on the road.
After the shocking incident, the siblings pulled over and called for assistance. The police report indicated that the turtle caused significant damage to the car, rendering it undrivable and necessitating towing.
Lark credited the thickness of the windshield and her quick reflexes for preventing a catastrophic outcome. She noted, “According to the police officer, had the glass not been as thick as it was, and if I hadn’t immediately reduced my speed upon spotting the object, the outcome could have been catastrophic.”
Authorities managed to remove the turtle from the windshield, and initially, it survived the ordeal, albeit with one of its legs injured. However, a few days later, Lark learned that the turtle had passed away due to severe blood loss from its injuries.
Reflecting on the incident, Lark issued a solemn warning to fellow drivers, stressing the importance of staying attentive behind the wheel. She emphasized the need for vigilance on the road, cautioning that distracted driving could lead to such unexpected accidents.
