Day-Lewis, the only performer to win three Best Actor Oscars, is undoubtedly one of our generation’s greatest performers, and recent big-screen releases have sorely missed his powerful talent.
Although he announced his retirement in 2017, much to the dismay of almost everyone who loves film, Day-Lewis is ready to return to the big screen with his son Ronan Day-Lewis’ directorial debut.

The father-son combo co-wrote the forthcoming picture Anemone, produced by Focus Features and Plan B. The film will explore the dynamic relationships between fathers, sons, and brothers, marking Day-Lewis’ first acting role since Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2017 film Phantom Thread.
“We could not be more excited to partner with a brilliant visual artist in Ronan Day-Lewis on his first feature film, alongside Daniel Day-Lewis as his creative collaborator,” Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski said in a statement, according to Variety. “They have written a truly exceptional script, and we look forward to bringing their shared vision to audiences alongside the team at Plan B.”
Ronan, 26, is a painter and visual artist, so we can expect the film to be visually stunning, especially given his father’s prodigious skill.
In 2017, Day-Lewis announced his retirement from acting for unclear reasons, just before the premiere of Phantom Thread. A spokeswoman for the actor stated then, “[Day-Lewis] is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years.”
“This is a private decision, and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject,” they said, according to Variety.

In an interview with W magazine, the actor explained his decision to quit, saying that before producing Phantom Thread, he ‘didn’t know I was going to cease performing.’
“I knew it was uncharacteristic to issue a statement,” the There Will Be Blood actress explained. However, I desired to establish a boundary. I had no intention of returning to another project. I’ve always said I should stop acting, and I’m not sure why this time was different, but the desire to quit took root in me and became a habit. It was something I needed to accomplish.”
