An old cottage for pennies: How a woman converted it into a cozy home

She gave an ancient cottage new life by buying it for pennies. This modest house, which once appeared to be beyond repair, has been converted into a pleasant and beautiful refuge.

“At first, the home appeared radically different: shattered windows, crumbling flooring, and an overgrown lawn with shrubs. The former owners had long forgotten about the structure and the site, seemingly sealing the cottage’s fate: demolition. However, she saw its underlying beauty and potential for transformation.

“The home was constructed in the 1970s and had an area of 76 square meters. There were also three outbuildings on the site, one of which was eventually converted into a small guesthouse.

The landscape, which had apple trees, also needs restoration. Real estate brokers were just offering the property and trees, calling the home a wreck. But she quickly realized that with rehabilitation and restoration, it could be brought back to life.

“The ancient windows and Russian stove were kept and refurbished. The property now has everything needed for a comfortable stay, including contemporary kitchen appliances, a shower, a toilet, and hot water. We obtained furniture through classified advertisements and renovated historic pieces. The idea was to create a pleasant place with individuality, rather than huge and massive architecture.

The bathroom, which resembles that of a fine hotel, received special attention: a wide bathtub, an antique dresser, and wooden paneling create a warm and friendly ambiance.

The children’s room overlooks the apple orchard, while the second bedroom has a full-size double bed. We chose unique decorative features for the home, including hummingbird wallpaper, which has become a fashionable accent.

“The house’s exterior has transformed beyond recognition. The bright yellow façade complements the greenery of the garden and the blue sky.

It’s now the ideal location for weekend trips, gathering veggies for salads, and resting with a book in a hammock. We could breathe new life into an antique house like this.
