A royal expert explains why King Charles refuses to reach out to Prince Harry

The Duke of Sussex’s efforts to reconcile with his father appear to have failed yet again. Following Prince Harry’s recent remarks regarding his troubled relationship with King Charles III, one royal expert believes the monarch’s silence is part of a planned and deeply ingrained royal strategy.

Following a big judicial setback over security arrangements in the UK on May 2, the Duke of Sussex revealed that Charles has been unresponsive to his attempts to communicate. Royal expert Christopher Andersen feels there is a simple reason why Charles has yet to interact publicly or privately with his son.

“Charles appears to be pushing the ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ principle to an unprecedented extent, doesn’t it?” Andersen made a point. The royal expert added, “The King is just adhering to a long-standing royal tradition of not demeaning something by remarking on it. The Palace does not want Harry’s words to gain traction.”

Andersen went on to say that King Charles III has a lot of personal and public duties, and getting into a public fight with his son isn’t going to help. He remarked that Harry, on the other hand, has chosen the opposite strategy, as seen by his headline-making BBC News interview.

The royal expert indicated that Harry went public, most likely owing to the palace’s continued private quiet. “It must be extremely frustrating for him not to be able to reach his father on the phone.” There’s a true Catch-22 here: As long as the Palace ignores Harry in the foolish expectation that he’ll go away, he’ll be forced to increase the number of his public statements,” he said.

Despite the friction, Harry has declared his wish to reconcile with the royal family. He clarified it that extending the fight serves no purpose. He also mentioned Charles’ continued fight with illness, expressing the uncertainty about how much time his father had left.

Andersen feels Harry may sincerely want reconciliation, but his technique is detrimental, adding, “If Harry really wants to reconcile with his family, he has an odd way of showing it.”

Andersen said that, while Harry has shown a wish to reconcile with his family, he has also accused the palace of meddling in his court case. The 40-year-old questioned their worry for his family’s safety, saying he can’t envisage returning to the UK with Meghan Markle and their two children, Archie and Lilibet.

However, according to Andersen, in the same sentence, Harry cites his father’s worsening health as a cause to reconcile, an appeal that appears to contradict the harsh charges he has made publicly.

The May 2 verdict marked the end of Harry’s most recent court dispute with the UK government over the security measures made for him and his family during visits to the nation.

Although the court accepted his “powerful” evidence regarding the dangers they faced, it ruled that his sense of unfairness did not constitute a viable legal argument.

At the heart of his argument was the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC) committee, which makes security decisions for senior royals on behalf of the Home Office. Harry claimed that he was wrongfully denied the automatic, extensive protection afforded to other senior royals.

He said that his case should have been reviewed by Ravec’s Risk Management Board (RMB), which is responsible for reviewing possible dangers, but this step was skipped.

While judges agreed that the committee had deviated from customary procedure when deciding on his security in 2020, they eventually judged the decision appropriate given his unique and complex circumstances.

Harry has thought about how his security changes affected him, his wife, and his kids. He claimed that officials were aware of the hazards associated with reducing protection in 2020 and felt that the move was designed to coerce the couple into returning to royal life.

“But if you realize that didn’t work, don’t you want to keep us safe? Whether you’re the government, the Royal Household, my father, or my family, despite our disagreements, don’t you want to protect our safety?” he questioned.

When asked if he missed living in the UK, the father of two stated he had a strong affinity for the country, despite feeling let down by some of its citizens. He said it was disheartening that he would never be able to properly introduce his children to the country he calls home.

Additionally, following the court’s verdict, Harry stated that he will not pursue any further legal action. He decided that the court’s judgment demonstrated that there was no realistic road to victory through the legal system.

He also stated that the decision had taken him off guard and that he would have preferred better advice earlier in the process.

“This, at the heart of it, is a family dispute, and it makes me really, really sad that we’re sitting here today, five years later, where a decision that was made most likely, in fact I know, to keep us under the roof,” said the man.

Prince Harry is gravely saddened by the court’s judgment, expressing regret in both the conclusion and those who supported it. He feels that some people, particularly those with negative motives toward him, may see the verdict as a success.

Despite his disappointment, Harry is already taking the next steps. He asked Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper to intervene in his security matter and investigate how the Ravec committee works.

In a statement issued following the verdict, he stated that he had written to Cooper, requesting an urgent assessment of the situation. However, a representative for the Home Office stated that they appreciated the court’s judgment and that the UK’s protective security system is rigorous and proportional.

“It is our long-standing policy not to provide detailed information on those arrangements, as doing so could compromise their integrity and affect individuals’ security,” the spokeswoman explained.

Buckingham Palace also denied Harry’s claim that the Royal Household had a hand in the 2020 decision to withdraw his security. The palace now claims that the subject has been thoroughly reviewed in court several times, with each verdict reaching the same result.

Even while Harry works to safeguard his family, the Sussexes go about their lives. On May 6, 2025, Archie became six years old. Meghan marked the occasion online by posting a sweet photo of their son on Instagram.

A golden sunset extended across the water as Archie stood silently facing the horizon, his diminutive figure silhouetted against a blaze of orange light. It was a relaxing, almost lyrical moment.

There were no royal backgrounds or formal photographs — simply a youngster in pajamas reveling in the glory of the setting sun, capturing the purity of a moment. The Instagram post had a delicate force, presenting a tale about introspection, love, and the rapid passage of time.

The Duke of Sussex was miles away in Las Vegas, devoting his voice and presence to a cause near and dear to his heart: youth empowerment through The Diana Award’s new program, “Pledge to Invest.”

Launched on May 6, the same day Archie celebrated his birthday, “Pledge to Invest” aims to encourage long-term support for the next generation of leaders by encouraging forward-thinking firms to assist youth development in meaningful, sustainable ways.

While Harry’s absence from home on his son’s birthday was notable, it is not the first time the Duke of Sussex has missed Archie’s big day. On May 6, 2023, Harry attended his father’s coronation as King Charles III and Queen Camilla in London, England.

At the launch, Harry participated in a thought-provoking conversation with Dr. Tessy Ojo CBE, CEO of The Diana Award, and two recipients of the coveted Legacy Award—young changemakers Sikander ‘Sonny’ Khan and Christina Williams, who embodied Diana’s spirit and vision.

Paul Fipps, President of Global Customer Operations at ServiceNow, hosted the Knowledge 2025 event where the conversation took place. The discussion was about how firms may invest resources, mentoring, platforms, and long-term prospects in youth-led innovation and leadership.

Before taking the stage, Harry and Dr. Ojo met with over 20 key businesspeople, donors, and social impact leaders, including ServiceNow CEO Bill McDermott, in a private roundtable.

The event provided a chance to discuss concrete solutions for bridging the gap between corporate power and grassroots potential.

Harry made his impact felt on a worldwide scale with powerful remarks and a clear dedication to the future generation. Speaking at the event, he gave profoundly personal insights on the importance of empowering young voices—a cause that parallels his late mother’s.

Reflecting on his engagement with The Diana Award, Harry talked passionately about the powerful impact of seeing young people overcome hardship and use their obstacles as catalysts for change.

“That’s not just inspiring—it’s the kind of untapped potential we can’t afford to overlook,” he told CNN. His speech criticized existing structures, noting that too many young people are still shut out of leadership pipelines because open and accessible avenues have not been established.

Throughout the talk, Harry questioned outmoded notions of youth, pointing out that today’s generation is already taking on leadership roles without asking for permission.

He added that what distinguishes them is not just their emotional intelligence and social consciousness, but also their refusal to accept the status quo. “If we’re serious about a better future, we need to stop underestimating them and start listening,” he told us.

In a moment of genuine acknowledgment, the Duke turned to fellow panelists Sikander and Christina, both young changemakers, and praised their leadership and principles.

“This generation demonstrates unprecedented empathy…” It’s empathy, genuineness, truth, honesty, and courage,” he said.

Harry acknowledged their courage in standing up for what is right in their communities, saying, “That is precisely what we need. We need brave leaders. So I lift my cap to both of you and what you stand for.

Christina and Sikander also spoke, addressing business executives directly and emphasizing the benefits of mentorship.

“Providing chances for upskilling and education, as well as professional mobility, is not a charitable gesture. You should act now to ensure that a competent and capable generation can take over your businesses in a few decades, as Christina stated.

Sikander shared his thoughts, saying, “I want people to understand that all of us have been in that position, where we’ve been young people looking for a chance, and then somebody gave us that chance.”

He continued, “It is our responsibility to uplift those around us and create opportunities for others.” And as a young person, I’ve tried to do that every day: be a mentor to younger people and attempt to create that ripple effect.”

It’s more than simply traditional leadership; it’s about instilling confidence, empathy, and belief in one’s own voice, particularly among those who may otherwise go unnoticed.

The charity does not pursue this purpose in isolation. Collaboration is critical to its impact. By collaborating with young leaders and supportive partners, The Diana Award provides routes that are not only inclusive but also highly sensitive to the changing issues that today’s kids confront.

Harry’s reflections at the charity’s recent launch event were more than just composites of a speech, they were a call to action. Even on a day when he was physically far from Archie, Harry was undeniably close to the future his son would one day inherit.
