Here’s a beautiful video in which the bride makes an odd request: she wants her father to sing during her wedding celebration. Dad complies, bringing the entire house to tears with a poignant song they will never forget.

Weddings are more than simply two individuals agreeing to spend their lives together. It is also about two families coming together, combining, and becoming one. But from the parents’ perspective, it’s also an ending: their child is starting a new life without them.

Here’s a father who thoroughly understands and chooses the ideal song to sing to his daughter, Madeline Galbreath. He starts off by pretending that everyone was expecting him to perform Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” and he even manages to get the audience to sing along for a few bars.

But then he goes into his true song: Heartland’s melancholy ballad “I Loved Her First,” which fathers sing silently to their daughters as they watch them grow into someone else’s bride.
