Danielle: Tumors Shaped Her Life, Reclaimed in a Day.
Danielle went from Chicago to California for a procedure she’d been waiting for since she was five. Her illness, neurofibromatosis type 1, caused benign tumors to form along her nerves, including a large one on her nose.
“These tumors started growing when you were like five,” Dr. Carl Truesdale observed as he examined her.
Danielle nodded, as she was accustomed to discussing topics that most people had not heard of. Though the tumors were not painful, they had influenced almost every aspect of her life, including social interactions, confidence, and even how she traveled across the world.
“I don’t know anybody else who has neurofibromatosis in real life,” she told me. She had gotten support online, but never in person. People rarely spoke directly to her, but the looks and muttered comments throughout the years had made an impression.
Despite her illness, Danielle characterized her life as normal. She worked at home, raised her five-year-old kid, and remained close to her mother. “I’ve always had many good friends,” she told me. However, venturing into unfamiliar rooms, particularly with strangers, made her feel self-conscious.
Her nerves were in ruins prior to the surgery. “I will look different,” she said. “So it’s going to be something I probably have to get used to.” Nonetheless, the prospect of breathing easier and facing the world without the tumor’s shadow surpassed her fears.
Dr. Truesdale, who is educated in both reconstructive and cosmetic face surgery, thoroughly detailed the procedure. “This tumor is of the soft tissue… but if I need to, I’ll move cartilage or build everything up to give your nostril shape and support,” he said to her.
Danielle didn’t have a CT scan, so he had to depend on touch, tracing the tumor’s edges with his fingertips. His training in head and neck surgery made him an ideal candidate for the delicate treatment.
When it was finished, the crew met in quiet. Danielle’s face appeared altered, yet clearly hers. “I’ll be more confident,” she explained. “I know that I won’t be so nervous to be around new people.”
Her metamorphosis spoke to viewers, many of whom had closely followed her journey. One person said she was “gorgeous before but… more radiant now,” and another was thrilled to discover that Dr. Truesdale had “kept her nose and didn’t make it something it’s not.”

PHENOMENAL.” Another woman said, “I almost teared up when she talked about being able to go to her daughter’s school now.”
