We all remember our childhood sweethearts—the first person we promised to marry when we were still in our teens.
Matt Grodsky, on the other hand, was not joking when he stepped up in front of his preschool class at the age of three and stated that one day he would marry his childhood sweetheart, Laura Scheel.
These two fell in love at first sight when they met at their school in Phoenix, Arizona.
They did everything together, and everyone who saw them thought they were the prettiest pair.
“We have many wonderful memories of each other. Matt recites movie lines and scenes from “The Lion King” as Laura teaches him to doodle and swing. We had playdates at each other’s houses and watched movies with our parents,” the pair told Obsev.
The two toddlers had so much fun together that they decided to hang out throughout the weekend. Their parents assumed it was puppy love at the time, but the young pair proved them incorrect.
“One of my very first memories is of being 3 years old and standing up in front of my preschool class, declaring that I would marry her someday,” Matt told the magazine PEOPLE.
His fellow preschoolers laughed at his sweet proclamation, to which Matt replied, “Just wait,” according to Today.
However, when they attended different primary schools, the pair separated, with just images of each other appearing on the family Christmas cards that each family sent to each other.
Through a common acquaintance in high school, the pair reconnected and resumed dating, only to separate again in college. Laura attended Northern Arizona University, whereas Matt went to Columbia College Chicago, which is about 1,600 miles away.
The couple decided to attempt to make a long-distance relationship work, and after some trial and error throughout freshman year, they devised a visiting plan that worked for both of them.
But Matt had more serious aspirations for his connection with Laura, and in their senior year, he planned to see her where it all began: their preschool.
Matt dropped down on one knee and proposed to her after asking her father for permission and positioning a family member to catch the moment.
“I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, is this happening?'” Laura stated. “I saw the ring and thought, “This is beautiful.” I’m so pleased with it.”
Matt’s brother brought out a picnic basket, the same one their father used when he proposed to his mother, filled with wedding magazines and sparkling cider, and then left the newly engaged pair to enjoy the special event.
On December 30, 2016, these lovely sweethearts wed.
Grodsky’s uncle, who presided at the wedding, said:
“For most kids in preschool, it’s about finding your snacks and your sleeping mats, but for them, it was about finding their soulmates.”
This is what true love looks like! It’s fantastic to see that it’s still around.
