33-year-old man jumps into the 9/11 Memorial Reflecting Pool…

According to various accounts, a 33-year-old man plunged into the 9/11 Memorial reflecting pool in New York City on Monday.

Police arrived at the north pool at the 9/11 Memorial at 1:30 p.m. ET and discovered that the guy—who has not been officially recognized—had leaped in, according to NBC News.

According to CBS News, Port Authority Police approached him through a maintenance access door.

The fall was around 30 feet, according to the outlet.

According to NBC News, an emergency medical services team rushed to the individual, who suffered injuries to his left leg and back. According to the website, EMS detained him and took him to Bellevue Hospital.

According to NBC News, the injuries were not life-threatening, and charges are pending.

According to CBS News, the man will be evaluated mentally, and a criminal case might include trespassing.

A Port Authority spokeswoman described the individual as an “apparently emotionally disturbed person,” according to NBC News.

Social media users uploaded a video of the man lying down in the water.

According to NBC News, security personnel eventually erected bars around the pool.

“We saw the firefighters and emergency personnel come down the escalator as we were walking into the memorial,” said visitor Lisa Bellow to CBS News. “They said everything’s fine, but they were coming in and going to a, like, back room, and we figured that down there was where they could access.”

According to CBS News, he “did this for his father,” while it was unclear if he lost anybody during the terrorist attacks.

“I just hope they’re still alive,” Weldon Stites, a visitor, told the site. “I’m curious to know why, but not everything is going to be answered.”

The monument has two pools, one for each of the Twin Towers before they collapsed on 9/11. According to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum website, each pool falls 30 feet into a basin and then descends 20 feet into a “central void.”

The pools are surrounded by the names of the 2,983 people who perished in the catastrophe and those who died in the World Trade Center bombing in 1993.

The NYPD did not immediately reply to a request for comments from people.
