Four US Army personnel have gone missing near Lithuania’s capital, according to reports.
The troops in issue were apparently conducting routine tactical training close outside the country’s capital, Vilnius, at the time of their disappearance.
There’s also a missing car.
In a statement published today (March 26), the US embassy in Vilnius said, “The soldiers, all from the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, were conducting scheduled tactical training at the time of the incident.”
“Search and recovery efforts are underway,” it states, according to The Independent.
The Lithuanian military added in a second statement that “a possible scene has now been identified, and a search and rescue operation is underway.”
The military has stated that it will update the search activities when new information becomes available.
The V Corps commanding commander, Lt. Gen. Charles Costanza, has commended Lithuanian officials for their assistance thus far.
“I would like to personally thank the Lithuanian Armed Forces and first responders who quickly came to our aid in our search operations,” he told reporters.
“It’s this kind of teamwork and support that exemplifies the importance of our partnership and our humanity regardless of what flags we wear on our shoulders.”
The troops and their vehicle were initially reported missing yesterday (March 25).
This is around six kilometers from the Belarus border.
Belarus is aligned with Russia, but Lithuania is a member of NATO and has long supported Ukraine.
Lithuania joined NATO in 2004, fourteen years after declaring independence from the now-defunct Soviet Union.
Russia had colonized the nation for 50 years before that moment.
With Russia’s and Lithuania’s history in mind, tensions between the two nations have existed for a long time.
