Melba Mebane, a Texas lady, spent 74 years working at Dillard’s department store. During this period, she never called in sick or missed a day of work.

In Tyler, Texas, in the Mayer & Schmidt department store, Melba began her professional life. She was employed there as an elevator girl.
When Dillard’s bought the business in 1956, Melba continued to work there until she retired at the age of 90 in July 2023.
At Dillard’s, Melba was a salesman. She loved seeing everyone she knew while working on the sales floor. Melba worked as an elevator girl for six months before getting promoted to the men’s apparel department and then to sales.
As a single mother while pursuing her profession, Melba raised her son, Terry Mebane. Terry claims that his mother switched from the men’s apparel section to the cosmetics section after being asked to cover for someone who called in sick. She demonstrated her competency and has since never left the cosmetics section.

The tale of the gift baskets Melba was able to sell was one of the numerous tales related to her amazing stint at Dillard’s. At the time, the gift basket sales weren’t very strong, but Melba discovered a way to make them. In the end, she sold all of the baskets after stepping out from behind and striking up conversations with individuals on the ground.
Manufacturers began bringing Melba things, such as perfume bottles, to market their goods once they saw how adept at selling she was.
According to Terry, her mother adored giving away the perfume she had on hand, which included numerous bottles from high-end labels like Chanel and Coco. He remembered:
Because she would give samples to our pastor as he shook her hand and wished her a good day as they left the church, he dubbed her the cosmetic bootlegger and gave her the nickname “our pastor.”
Terry acknowledged hearing from corporate executives, members of the Dillard family, and staff that Melba was the store’s beating heart.
After being absent from work for a few weeks due to health difficulties, Melba made the decision to retire. She became aware that she wasn’t operating at full capacity anymore and decided it was time to retire. She said that none of her friends still worked at Dillard’s and that she was unable to drive.
Even though Melba was praised, other people felt bad for her.

Melba’s friends, coworkers, and bosses threw her a retirement party when she made the choice to retire, and many of them made kind remarks about her that brought tears to her eyes. Drue Methany, the vice president of Dillard, who has known Melba for 65 years, praised her for her community work and friendships, saying:
I used to come to see her in cosmetics and think, “I wish I could be like that. She was great with people, and she still is.”
Terry claimed that Mr. and Mrs. Dillard and her mother were close friends. Because they loved her so much, the Dillards excused Melba from working night shifts and Sundays in her latter years.
James Saez, the shop manager at Dillard’s, said Melba trained a lot of individuals and encouraged them to strive for more. James said that Melba set the bar high for Dillard’s customer service.
Melba received a “Beyond Excellence” award from James and other Dillard staff members in their honor. On the wall of the shop is a plaque with her picture on it.
For 33 years, Melba worked with her friend Ginger Wimbs, who recalled that Melba had a sense of humor and a passion for both people and her job. Ginger said that Melba will be missed for her friendship as much as her sales prowess since she was kind and generous.
Terry acknowledged that Melba continued to put in 40 hours a week of labor even as she became older. He would travel and pick up her mother even in the winter and inclement weather when she worked four eight-hour days in her 70s and 80s.
When people discovered Melba’s tale online, they called her an “inspiration” and “role model” for young people, saying, “She must have liked and loved her work to be dedicated like that; she had what almost everybody wanted; I adore her.”

Despite the adulation, some people felt bad for Melba since she spent her whole life working. Someone remarked:
“This is the most depressing tale I’ve recently heard. She spent her entire life working, and now that she is nearing the end of her life, she retires. That’s terrible.
Another user said that because the United States doesn’t have a strong welfare system that supports individuals’ retirement, Melba’s story is a sad reality for many Americans.
“There is no salary if they don’t work. Older folks are forced to work rather than take advantage of their labor’s rewards.
Melba, who adored her job for more than 70 years, had nothing unfavorable to say about her employment. She just suggested that those just beginning out in the company show up regularly and never treat it only as a salary. Also, Melba urged people to remain in the places where God had placed them.
