Love transcends both boundaries and time, and Joe Potenzano and Mary Elkind are a testament to that enduring truth. In October, they are set to exchange vows, reigniting a love story that began an incredible 64 years ago.
Their journey commenced in 1959 at Joe’s sister’s wedding, where Mary served as the radiant maid of honor, and Joe stood as the dashing best man. The connection was immediate, with Joe confessing, “I fell head over heels for her, and she felt the same about me.”

Despite a brief romance, life led them down separate paths. Mary pursued her dreams in the professional dance world, while Joe immersed himself in engineering studies at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Mary eventually married and raised a family in Rockland County, New York, while Joe embraced the life of a bachelor.
However, fate has a way of reuniting kindred spirits. Over the years, their families played a role in keeping them connected. Feeling the weight of loneliness in his later years, Joe finally gathered the courage to ask Mary, now a widow for nine years, out on a date.

Mary chuckled as she recalled the amusing detail, “He asked me out, and then realized he didn’t even have my number!” Their dates were filled with dinners, movies, and lengthy phone calls, culminating in a heartfelt proposal from Joe in the comfort of his home.
Although Joe harbored some hesitation about being considered marriage material at his age, he couldn’t deny his desire to marry Mary. The lovebirds eagerly anticipate their wedding day, with plans for a romantic honeymoon in Cape Cod.

Reflecting on their journey, Mary expressed, “I’ve always had a soft spot for Joe. Sometimes, I’d wonder how life would’ve turned out if we’d been together. Now, I guess we’ll find out.” Their story is a beautiful reminder that love, regardless of time passed, has the power to reunite souls and create enduring bonds.
