When you compete in a race, your top two priorities are to win the race and, more importantly, to win it first. This is precisely the intention of Madeline Dams’ participation in the CCWC, the women’s cross-country championship for Boston College.
Madeline arrived at the race prepared and determined to win. Her hair was pulled back, her shoes were tied, and she was prepared to give it her all. Unfortunately, despite her optimism that everything would go as planned, Madeline’s own body started betraying her.

In a CBS Boston interview, Madeline recalled the moment when her endurance gave out.
“I was competing in the race of my life. I was doing very well. As I ascended the hill (to the finish line), I began to feel quite exhausted. All of a sudden, I feel a wave coming over me, and my legs suddenly give way from beneath me. I lacked control. I really don’t remember falling; instead, I remember being on the ground and wondering, “Why am I here?” Gеt up.’”

A wave of exhaustion passed over Madison, and she felt as though she couldn’t go anymore. She collapsed on the ground and tried repeatedly to get herself up, but she was unable since all of her energy had been used up. Her heartbreaking sight of the other runners passing her by as she sat on the ground, feeling helpless, was heartbreaking. She knew at that moment that she would not be able to cross the finish line, even if it was just a few steps away.
