A high school football game turned tragic when a Florida player fell and died during play.
The catastrophe has left the community in shock and sadness. Chance Gainer, an 18-year-old student and standout athlete at Port St. Joe High School, passed out on the field while playing versus Liberty County High. Despite medical workers’ efforts, a neighboring hospital declared him dead.

Gainer had no pulse when emergency personnel arrived, but he regained it before being transported to the hospital in an ambulance, according to Gulf County School Superintendent Jim Norton. Sadly, he died shortly after arriving at the facility.
Tim Davis, the athletic director for Liberty County, explained what happened after they hauled Gainer away. “We learned approximately an hour later that he had died. Four minutes into the fourth quarter, the Port St. Joe coaches decided to complete the game so they could inform the players collectively, he explained. The Port St. Joe community, which recognized Gainer not only for his athletic prowess but also for his kindness and calm demeanor, has mourned his death as expected. Norton praised Gainer as a phenomenal athlete and person, citing his “world-class speed” and even more extraordinary personality.

The young athlete, who had a GPA above 4.0, had recently visited Vanderbilt University to examine college options. “It’s the most heartbreaking situation imaginable,” Norton said in a statement released Saturday. He also urged that everyone remember Gainer’s parents and loved ones in their prayers. Meanwhile, Port St. Joe High School opened its doors on the same day to allow the community to come together and grieve Gainer’s death. The school dispatched grief counselors to assist students, faculty, and the football team in coping with the loss. We have postponed the upcoming football game against Blountstown until further notice. When interviewed, many individuals had wonderful things to say about Gainer. Principal Sissy Godwin described him as “a very sweet young man” whose grin could brighten any room. Football coach Tanner Jones described him as “feisty” and recognized his potential to “determine the outcome of games.” His friend Kolten Johnson described the moment he learned of Gainer’s death.

When his mother began weeping, he sensed “something was wrong.” When the game was over, she informed him of the news. Johnson said that Gainer was “an amazing football player, an amazing friend, and a great kid to be around.” Naturally, many responded to the news on social media. The Florida High School Sports Athletic Association expressed sympathy and condolences to Gainer’s family, friends, and the citizens of Port St. Joe. A person close to the community remarked, “No mother should have to bury their child. I’m sending my deepest condolences and prayers to his family. Rest well, Chance Gainer [sic]. Many more people shared their prayers and concerns. Someone commented, “It’s sad. The safety of young athletes should be our first priority in sports, and the fact that so many tragedies have occurred in such close succession has likely shocked and saddened the whole community. Every young life lost due to tragedy while pursuing their aspirations is heartbreaking. To show their continued support, the Gulf County School District has organized a series of activities to commemorate Gainer. A local pizza restaurant donated pizzas for Monday’s lunch to give Gainer’s mother and aunts time to grieve, since they had worked in the Port St. Joe Elementary Lunchroom for many years. Additionally, Tuesday will see the closure of all district schools, followed by an open luncheon for local athletes and coaches. Normal courses will resume on Wednesday. As of this writing, plans for a “Celebration of Life” celebration on Saturday 14 remain undisclosed. Our heartfelt sympathies to the Gainer family and the Port St. Joe community during this difficult time, as well as to all other football players who have passed away. RIP Chance Increaser.
