An 11-year-old’s spine-tingling rendition of “The Sound of Silence” has gone viral, with 28 million views and people frozen in place, as if time itself had stopped. Every note spilled out with a depth and intensity that seemed much too large for someone so young, sending shivers down the backs of strangers all over the world. The outcome wasn’t just a song; it was a moment that touched people’s emotions, and the globe can’t stop replaying it.
Music is ageless, and history has proven this fact. Songs from decades past have made their way onto the playlists of millennials and some of Generation Z. It is not simply about the vocalist, melody, or words. For me, it’s a combination of all of these factors, as well as how the song moves me.

Simon and Garfunkel made their musical debut in the early 1960s. They appeared to be typical of most of the harmony-enthralled children. But by the age of 15, they’d proven everyone incorrect. These two singer/songwriters were far from ordinary people. They broke the top 50 with songs like “Hey, Schoolgirl” and “Tom and Jerry.” These two young people were like musical sponges. What’s more remarkable is that they wanted to be more than that.

The pair created the song “The Sound of Silence” shortly after President Kennedy’s assassination, in 1964. The music was about people’s inability to connect on a more profound emotional level. Now, decades later, eleven-year-old Jadyn Rylee has recorded a version of the song. Understanding the depth at such a young age is extraordinary in itself. Her vocals are really remarkable.
