Mom shows off mother-in-law’s absurdly generous ‘sick care gift,’ and it’s making MIL critics jealous

In my experience, grandparents tend to give a lot of… stuff. And while their hearts are in the right place, it can be difficult — even frustrating — to find space in your home for everything. All that “stuff” often adds to clutter and mental load. And I know I’m not alone.

According to some informal surveys, around 75% of parents are overwhelmed by the number of gifts their children receive from grandparents. Based on the parents I know, that number feels spot on. And it’s not just toys — we’re talking food, baked goods, groceries… sometimes it’s just too much!

But it’s a double-edged sword. Because sometimes the gifts are genuinely amazing — and incredibly useful.

It’s important to remember that grandparents’ (often over-the-top) gift-giving is rooted in love and generosity. It’s their way of staying connected to family, especially when they can’t be physically present. A little gift here, a tray of brownies there — it’s all part of how they show love and try to help.

To that end, a woman on TikTok recently shared an absolutely jaw-dropping haul from her mother-in-law — an extravagant care package delivered when her family was down with the flu.

Makenzie Hubbell could barely contain her laughter as she told the story on camera:

@chunkymak i fear the gatorade wont last more than 3 days😂😭 #plussize #plussizeedition #groceries #groceryhaul ♬ original sound – chunkymak

“My entire family is sick, and we asked my mother-in-law to shop for us. So… this is everything she got.”
She holds up two eight-packs of Gatorade — enough to hydrate a professional sports team.
“We asked for some Goldfish for my son, for when he starts eating.”
Cue a massive, bulk-sized container of Goldfish crackers.
Then come two gigantic bags of Tyson chicken nuggets.
“We requested ground turkey.”
And sure enough:
“She got us two.”
Hubbell then adds, holding up a jar:
“Did not ask for these, but I’m very grateful. Strawberries are really expensive!”
And it just kept going. A huge bag of chicken breasts that could feed a family for a week. But the box wasn’t just food and groceries — it included thoughtful extras too: a book for the baby, cupcakes for Mom’s birthday, and a gift bag with a candle and T-shirt.
It was a care package that kept on giving — like a clown car of supplies and love.

It’s safe to say that Grandma went above and beyond… as grandparents often do.

@chunkymak Replying to @weetchofthewoods she also got us the sams club big pack of pampers cruisers in the wrong size so she’s going to exchange them but she’s got such a huge heart🩷 #plussize #plussizeedition #groceries #groceryhaul ♬ original sound – chunkymak

The video quickly went viral, with commenters chiming in — and many wondering whether mothers-in-law have been unfairly criticized all this time.

Turns out, despite the clichés, moms-in-law are showing up in some of the best ways.

“You won the mother-in-law lottery,” one commenter wrote.
“This is my MIL too — she gives so much and won’t let us pay anything back.”
“My ex’s mom — my oldest son’s grandma — drops off care boxes every time she goes to Costco. Always rotisserie chicken, muffins, fruit, school snacks, fresh veggies.”
Others shared their gratitude for generous mothers-in-law:
“Welcome to the Best Mother-in-Law Club. When my husband was sick before he passed, my MIL would even arrange for her cleaner to come the day before he got home from the hospital.”
“Mine’s like this, but times four! If I ask for anything, it turns into a huge haul. We’re so lucky.”
Some users were just happy to see a positive story for once:
“I’m loving all these great MIL stories. I’m not one and don’t have one, but they always seem to get such a bad rap.”
To top it all off, Hubbell’s mother-in-law came back the next day — with more food and what looked like an entire pharmacy’s worth of medical supplies.
Sure, the relationship between women and their mothers-in-law has long been fodder for sitcoms and stand-up routines. It’s not always easy — they’re protective of their kids, have opinions about how grandchildren should be raised, and can sometimes cross boundaries.

But what we see in Hubbell’s story is a reminder of the good. It’s a call for perspective.

Yes, some viewers commented with sadness that they don’t have a close relationship with their MIL. And that’s valid. But for those who do — or who are working on it — this is a great reminder to pause and appreciate the effort.

Even if it comes with too many snacks, a pile of groceries you didn’t ask for, or more child-pampering than you’d like — it’s love, in its own language.

And sometimes, like in Hubbell’s video, it’s the kind of love that fills your fridge, your heart, and your TikTok comments section all at once.
