People are concerned after witnessing Pope Leo’s unscripted encounter with the crowd

Many people are sharing the same thoughts after Pope Leo’s spontaneous interaction with a crowd — especially after he accepted a rather striking gift from a group of Americans who had come to meet him.

Social media is buzzing with comments about Pope Leo’s warm and frequent interactions with audiences, particularly after a touching encounter with three Americans. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, born in Chicago, has received enthusiastic welcomes across the globe — but none more heartfelt than those from fellow Americans.

Pope Leo, the first American pope, succeeded Pope Francis, and his appointment has led many Americans to present him with gifts and tokens during public appearances. One standout moment occurred in June, when he delighted Chicagoans by wearing a Chicago White Sox baseball cap over his traditional papal attire.

More recently, a family from Chicago gifted him a shirt with the phrase “Da Pope,” referencing the iconic Saturday Night Live sketch about Chicago sports fans — most famously known for chanting “Da Bears.”

The family has since spoken publicly about their joyful experience meeting the pope. However, some social media users have jokingly remarked that moments like this are exactly why we may never see another American pope. Sharing a video of the encounter on Reddit, one user commented:

“They’ll never let us have another American pope after this lol.”
Another wrote:
“I wonder if non-Americans find this incredibly embarrassing. As a Chicagoan, I love it.”
While a few people said it felt “wrong” to have an American pope, many others found the scene endearing.
One user said:
“Not a day goes by without the Chicago Tribune writing something about this pope. This video popped up just the other day. He made this family’s day! His smile and demeanor are so warm. And he speaks up for Gazans and Ukrainians. I’m proud to come from the same small town — Dolton.”
Another added:
“I know this is meant to be a trashy thread, but I think it’s actually really sweet. It shows how proud they are to have a pope from their city. We’ve got a lot of hometown pride here.”
One Redditor joked:
“Having briefly lived in Illinois, I can say with absolute certainty — he knew that shirt was coming eventually. It was inevitable.”
Someone else chimed in:
“I agree — Americans are so deeply unserious. And he loves it. You just know the Bears bring out his American side.”
It’s also been reported that Pope Leo even autographed a Pokémon card. As one user put it:
“He clearly sees both the joy and the gravity in his role — and how it can bring people together.”
