The Jersey City Police Department is heading the investigation because the helicopter crashed on the Jersey City side of the Hudson River.
As images of the deadly Hudson River helicopter accident circulated online, one specific aspect piqued viewers’ interest, or rather, what wasn’t there. The apparent disappearance of the item generated a wave of conjecture and panic on social media.
Six people, including three children, died on Thursday when a tour helicopter crashed into the Hudson River in New York, prompting an emergency rescue operation.
Authorities confirmed the murder of all passengers, including the pilot and a visiting family from Spain. A neighboring hospital transported two of the victims in serious condition, but they did not survive.
As word of the tragedy emerged and video footage of the accident spread online, many viewers focused on a disconcerting detail: the apparent loss of the helicopter’s tail.
One individual, inspecting the debris attentively, voiced the question that many others were thinking: “Where is the tail? Tail rotor??” Another person expressed greater alarm, saying, “Looks like the rotor and tail are missing. Horrible.”
After watching the movie numerous times, one viewer said, “From the videos I viewed, it appeared that the tail boom, tail rotor, and rudder were not present when it went down. Has anyone witnessed a video depicting the loss? “Did it hit anything before it fell?”
Some person chipped in, “Clearly came into contact with something…the whole tail is missing.”
One individual described the experience as bizarre and very unnerving, writing, “I find it completely crazy that the tail end of the helicopter just snapped off as it flew through [sic] the air.” Witnesses reported the helicopter struck nothing, simply produced a giant boom, and then the tail part came off and dropped into the Hudson, along with the aircraft. “How does that happen?”
One remark raised severe worries, saying, “When a tail and main rotor split mid-air, that’s not a small technical issue; that’s disastrous. Helicopters often do not fall apart without major carelessness or intentional actions.
The individual went on to add, “They are supposed to do inspections before taking off. It seems like someone removed the nuts and bolts on the tail and main rotor…that’s the first thing I noticed when I viewed the video.”
As inquiries continue, the internet is fascinated by the missing tail, a detail that many believe is too important to overlook.
