Aaron Rodgers on allegations that he wanted Jets coach Robert Saleh fired: ‘Patently false’

On Wednesday, New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers denied that he was involved in the removal of head coach Robert Saleh.

“I resent any of those accusations, because they’re patently false,” Rodgers stated on “The Pat McAfee Show” when asked whether he was involved with Saleh’s departure.

“Yesterday was a day that reminded you of the simple fact that all of us who played know all too well—it’s a tough business,” Rodgers said to reporters. “I adore Coach Saleh. We have a profound relationship. “He was a big reason I came to the Jets.”

Rodgers dedicated most of his time to addressing Saleh, expressing his sympathy for his family, and mentioning that Adam, Saleh’s son, had been his throwing partner throughout training camp.

“Anybody who is championing this decision, I would just appeal to the humanity of the decision,” Rodgers stated. He went on: “Not only is Robert a fantastic human being and damn good football coach, he’s also a family man.”

Rodgers stated that he was in the training room when he received the news. Rodgers suffered a minor ankle sprain in a defeat to the Minnesota Vikings in London on Sunday. He revealed that Woody Johnson, the owner of the Jets, called him on Monday night, the day before Saleh’s dismissal, merely to discuss his health and performance.

Despite being only one game behind the Buffalo Bills for first place in the AFC East, New York dismissed Saleh after a defeat to the Vikings dropped the team to 2-3.

Rogers has struggled this season. He has seven touchdown passes but four interceptions, which equals or exceeds the total number of interceptions he threw in numerous seasons previously in his career.

Rodgers’ current completion percentage of 61.0% is his lowest since 2015, aside from his 2023 season that ended after only four plays. And his 81.6 passer rating would be his lowest since becoming a full-time starter in 2008.

Throughout the season, Rodgers and Saleh have appeared to be at odds. In their defeat to the Denver Broncos, the Jets committed five false start penalties. Saleh suggested after the game that Rodgers’ problematic cadence might be the cause.

In a win against the New England Patriots, Rodgers appeared to reject Saleh’s attempted embrace following a score. Rodgers admitted after the game that he had no idea Saleh was going in for an embrace since “he’s not a big hugger.”
