Adrien Brody has won his second Academy Award. On Sunday, the 51-year-old actor received the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Brady Corbet’s film The Brutalist. However, while he has received accolades for his work in the film, viewers on social media were more interested in something else during last night’s event.
As he approached the stage to receive his trophy, Brody spat out his gum, which fans described as “disgusting.”
Adrien Brody has had an impressive career. Even yet, the 51-year-old actor does not have the status of a Hollywood celebrity. He became the youngest person to win the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2003, at the age of 29, for his role in The Pianist. Timothée Chalamet would eventually shatter the record.
Many may claim that collecting an Academy Award ensures one’s status as an A-list Hollywood superstar. However, Brody did not achieve the same degree of fame and recognition. He appears in Peter Jackson’s 2005 film King Kong, as well as other Wes Anderson films, including The Darjeeling Limited and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Following their successes, actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon landed major roles in critically acclaimed films. However, while Brody’s peers rose to the top, he struggled and was turned down for numerous roles. Adrien told Variety that he had already experienced this. He made his acting debut as a teenager in the PBS film Home at Last but struggled to get work after that.
“I’ve had to prove that the leading man can be unusual and unique and not typically handsome,” Brody told me. “However, in many cases, unassuming options are more convenient. Safer”
Unfortunately, many film executives and casting agencies did not consider him suitable for a main part.

Brody may not have been in some of the most well-known films of all time, but he has proven casting agencies and movie executives incorrect.
The actor earned the Best Actor award on Sunday for his work in The Brutalist. He portrays Laszlo Toth, a Hungarian Jewish architect who was forced to flee his own country during WWII. He finds himself in the United States, where he meets a wealthy entrepreneur called Harrison van Buren (played by Guy Pearce), who recognizes Toth’s extraordinary skill.
Van Buren recruits Toth to establish a community center in memory of his late mother, but their relationship rapidly deteriorates. The film’s premise is one that Brody is quite familiar with; remember that he appeared in The Pianist as pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman, who escaped the Holocaust by hiding from the Nazis in his hometown of Warszawa.
Brody’s work on The Pianist helped him prepare for The Brutalist, which runs three hours and 35 minutes.
“I just do what I believe is essential to find a connection and a sense of reality so that I may, you know, quote, “act” less and feel honest in an interpretation. I can’t depict a starving guy if I don’t comprehend hunger; I can’t show a starving man’s physical transformation if he doesn’t lose weight; and I can’t grasp classical music unless I know how to play it. “You name it,” Brody told National Public Radio.

“And fortunately, a lot of that work that I had done in an effort to honor Szpilman in The Pianist, and really to honor one man’s journey that represented the loss of 6 million and spoke to such a horrific time in our history, gave me a great deal of insight and understanding into what Laszlo’s past experiences were, that he is just on the precipice of overcoming as he arrives in the United States.”
Brody added, “This film is a non-traditional immigrant story, but it’s also about someone who’s been there. And it’s amazing how it has stuck with me and given me more understanding years later in a role like mine.”
Brody’s performance in The Brutalist garnered him an Academy Award nomination—and a win. He collected the prize on Sunday at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles, California, and so entered a very elite club. Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson, Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman, and Anthony Hopkins have all won two Academy Awards. The Brutalist received ten Academy Award nominations, winning three: Best Actor, Cinematography, and Original Score.
“Adrien has a face that is from another era,” his pal Scarlett Johansson told Variety. “He has such grief on his face. It’s a face designed for a close-up. Such expressive eyes—and some of his features are both overdone and delicate.”
Brody’s acceptance statement of “I feel so fortunate” made headlines. He began by thanking God for his job and the life he had chosen for himself. Brody ignored the winners’ 45-second acceptance speech timer.

“They’re already counting me down; good, thank you, God. Thank you for a wonderful life. If I may begin modestly, I would like to express my gratitude for the incredible outpouring of love that I have received from this planet and every individual who has treated me with respect and affection,” Brody said.
“You know, acting is a very fragile profession; it looks very glamorous, and certain moments it is, but the one thing I’ve gained, having the privilege to come back here, is to have some perspective, and no matter where you are in your career, no matter what you’ve accomplished, it can all go away, and I think what makes this night most special is the awareness of that and the gratitude that I have to still do the work that I love.”
Winning an award like this represents a destination, as my character mentions in the film, but it also represents a chance to start over and, hopefully, the opportunity to prove that I am worthy of such meaningful, important, and relevant roles over the next 20 years. I share this with my fellow candidates, who are just beautiful people who radiate elegance, decency, and brilliance through their work; there are so many people to thank. I will attempt to be as short as possible.”
Adrien Brody asked for the music to stop during his acceptance speech.
When 45 seconds had elapsed, the production began to play music, alerting Brody that his time was up. Brody, on the other hand, persisted for five minutes, demanding that they turn off the music.
“I’m done; please, please. I’m finishing up. I’ll wrap up. Please. “Turn off the music,” he added. “I have done this before. Thank you. Since this isn’t my first experience, I’ll proceed with caution. I won’t be outrageous. “I promise.”
“I’m here again to symbolize the ongoing traumas and consequences of war and systemic oppression, as well as antisemitism, racism, and othering. I hope for a world that is healthier, happier, and more inclusive, and I feel that if history can teach us anything, it is not to allow hatred to continue unchecked.
Brody’s girlfriend, Georgina Chapman, was heard reminding him to remember to thank his mother.
“I have to thank my mom and dad, who are here as well,” Brody told me. “They’ve just created such a strong foundation of respect, kindness, and a wonderful spirit; they’ve given me the strength to pursue this dream.”

Adrien Brody received criticism for spitting out and throwing his gum at his companion.. While Brody received attention for his lengthy statement, social media users noticed something else that immediately became a talking topic. As he approached the stage to accept his Oscar, he spit his chewing gum into his fingers and hurled it at Georgina Chapman. Fans quickly attacked him for what he had done.
“Adrien Brody could’ve used his long speech to apologize to his partner for throwing gum at her,” a commenter remarked on X.com. “Adrien Brody THROWING his gum at Georgina Chapman while on the stairs to accept his award is honestly more shocking to me than Will Smith slapping Chris Rock,” said another.
A third person said, “Arrest Adrien Brody for hurling his gum at his wife at the Oscars.” Another person commented, “Adrien Brody’s wife just got the award for Best Supportive Significant Other, and her trophy is a wad of her husband’s chewed gum, which he flung at her on his way up the stairs to claim his Oscar. Next level,” while another remarked, “Adrien Brody flinging gum at his wife and then attempting to deliver a touching speech is somehow worse than both?”
