After dating for 5 years, Van Hunt proposed to Halle Berry, and her response was surprising

The ring is in Halle Berry’s court!

The 58-year-old Oscar winner’s lover of five years, Van Hunt, told Today.com that he had already proposed.

“I put out the proposal, and it’s still on hold, as you can see,” he told the website following his first joint interview with Berry on the June 4 broadcast of Today with Jenna & Friends. “It’s just out there floating.” Perhaps you can encourage her”.

Berry explained that both of their previous marriages had an impact on her decision not to say yes yet.

“Well, I have been married three times. Van’s been married before, so we don’t need to marry to prove our love. We don’t,” Berry said.

Berry was formerly married to Olivier Martinez until their divorce in 2015. She was previously married to former Major League Baseball star David Justice and singer/actor Eric Benét before meeting Martinez, 57.

Despite her reservations, Berry hopes to marry Hunt someday.

“I think we will get married just because, out of the people I’ve been married to, this is the person I should have married,” Berry told me. “And I feel like I should, we should get married, but we don’t because we feel obligated to. I believe that is something we would like to accomplish just because we desire that expression.”

When asked when that would happen, she simply said, “Soon.”

Berry and Hunt made their relationship official in September 2020.

At the time, a source told PEOPLE that they had been dating for “several months” and had met Berry’s two children: Nahla, 17, and Maceo, 11. In a cover story interview with Marie Claire on September 10, the Oscar winner spoke openly about Hunt, telling the journal, “It was the first time I was madly in love before I had sex.”

“That has never happened to me, ever,” she continued. “Talk about one of those life-changing, amazing moments.” It was truly magical.”

The actress-filmmaker initially met the Grammy winner through his brother. “Van’s brother, who I had known for many years, came to me and said, ‘You should meet my brother,'” she stated.

Berry admitted that it “took me a minute to get it right” to manage their connection, but she believes strongly that the way the meeting happened indicates that “this is it.” “This is my person.” Berry told Women’s Health in November 2021 that she feels “fulfilled” in her relationship with Hunt.

“I wish I had met him sooner so I could have loved him for longer. I simply feel fulfilled. “I am happy in my life romantically, as a mother, and as an artist,” the Oscar winner stated at the time.

Berry went on, “I’m a much better mother in this circumstance than I would have been had I stayed in a romantic relationship that didn’t serve me and didn’t make me feel the way I need to feel as a woman.”

Over the years, the two have shared various social media tributes to each other, whether it’s celebrating birthdays, holidays, and everything in between.

“On Wednesdays, we drink pink 🥂 happy anniversary VanO,” Berry captioned a photo of two glasses of champagne outdoors in April 2022. Sharing the picture again to her Instagram Story, the Moonfall star wrote, “Happy anniversary @vanhunt,” adding a red heart and cheers emoji.

Like Berry, Hunt also has a career in the entertainment industry. He is a Grammy Award-winning recording artist who has released five albums, beginning with his self-titled debut album in 2004.

“Halle has found a soulmate in Van,” a film source previously told PEOPLE about the couple. “She feels greatly loved by him. She is very happy and secure in the relationship.”
