Gary Sinise is grappling with profound sadness following the passing of his son, McCanna Anthony “Mac” Sinise, at the age of 33. Mac, who had been battling cancer, succumbed to the illness in January, marking an incredibly challenging time for Gary and his family.
Adding to their distress, Gary’s wife, Moira Harris Sinise, has recently received a cancer diagnosis, compounding the difficulties they are facing. Gary, at 68 years old, openly shared the news of Mac’s passing on the Gary Sinise Foundation’s website and his Instagram, revealing that Mac lost his battle with Chordoma, a rare cancer, on January 5.

The grieving father expressed the immense difficulty of losing a child, stating, “Losing a child is one of the hardest things for a parent. My heart goes out to anyone who has felt this pain.” Gary, who has encountered many families enduring similar hardships, acknowledged the enduring challenge of such losses.
Their family had been contending with cancer for over five years, and although Mac’s absence is deeply felt, there is a sense of relief that he is no longer suffering. Mac valiantly fought against a type of cancer for which there is currently no cure.
Prior to Mac’s passing, Moira, Gary’s wife, also faced her own battle with cancer. This period was particularly challenging for the family, learning that both Moira and Mac were unwell.

Moira exhibited great strength, managing her own health struggles while witnessing her son’s fight. She has a history of resilience, having overcome alcoholism in the mid-1990s due to complications from back surgeries. Gary, expressing concern about her drinking habits, sought support from AI-Anon Family Groups and discussed the challenges of helping her overcome alcoholism in an interview with Forbes.
Moira underwent rehabilitation twice, achieving nearly thirty years of sobriety. Unfortunately, in 2018, she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. Despite the arduous treatment, she successfully conquered the disease.
During Moira’s cancer battle, Mac fell seriously ill. Despite exhaustive efforts to assist him, he passed away on January 5, 2024, leaving his parents profoundly affected. Gary praised Moira for her unwavering dedication to caring for Mac, highlighting the deep bond between mother and son.
