Andrew Garfield was presenting an award alongside Goldie Hawn at the 2025 Oscars when a wonderful occurrence occurred.

Garfield turned to Hawn to say a few words before presenting the Best Animated Film award on Sunday, March 2, 2025, in Las Vegas’ Dolby Theater. He told the actress from The First Wives Club how she offered delight in ways she didn’t realize. He praised her for bringing “my mother the most joy, the most comfort” during her lifetime. Garfield has always shown his affection for his mother, who died in 2019 from pancreatic cancer.

“I consider myself extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to that individual. “That person is Goldie Hawn,” he told the actress, holding her hand. “You’ve given us films full of delight. You’ve often raised our spirits and made us believe that everything was OK in the world,” he remarked.

Hawn was impressed by Garfield’s emotional gratitude, saying, “Thank you so much, that really touches me.”

“I was so lucky [to] make movies… and make people laugh,” she told me. “And maybe some didn’t, but that’s okay,” she explained. Garfield’s kind comments to Hawn moved the actress to tears.

Garfield has never shied away from talking about his pain at losing his mother. When describing his involvement in the film We Live In Time, he said, “I’m not special in that regard… [But] one of the most healing and reassuring, soothing moments I’ve had is realizing that this has been the way it’s been since time immemorial.”

“Sons have been losing their mothers, and daughters have been losing their mothers [since the beginning of time],” the actor told me. “We’re lucky if it goes that way rather than the other. Of course, numerous parents lose their children in one way or another; I can’t comprehend how that must feel,” he remarked.
