Following the deaths of his father and brother, the broadcaster opted to conceal his grief for many years. Only later did he find the courage to face it. A fashion legend raised him and has since paved the way for a successful career.
The prominent person was born into a well-known family and grew up in two quite different worlds. While his mother’s family had a rich history and impact, he was drawn to his father’s heritage as a youngster. His father, Wyatt, grew up in modest circumstances on a Mississippi plantation.

Though he looked to his father’s humble origins, the celebrity’s boyhood took place in a world far different from the fields his father previously knew. He was reared in a family known as “American royalty” with his older brother Carter.
His mother, Gloria, descended from a wealthy and artistic family, becoming a well-known designer and painter.

All the celebrity around him seemed natural. He recalls attending supper with people like Charlie Chaplin and Truman Capote. The celebrity revealed:
“We were to find out who was coming, see their movies, and chat with them.”
Gloria did not raise him like other mothers. He hoped Mom was more involved, such as knowing his buddies or keeping snacks in the kitchen. But such ideas never lasted long. He always felt more at ease at home, where his mother was artistic, unconventional, and full of surprises.

Away from the limelight of fashion and parties, his father, Wyatt, made his mark with words, becoming a novelist and screenwriter.

A tragedy occurred while he was just ten years old. Wyatt died in 1978 while undergoing open-heart surgical procedures. It was a watershed moment. The political pundit once stated:
“Suddenly, the world looked to be a very dangerous place. In many respects, the person I was appeared to evaporate at that point, and a new person emerged.”

That tragedy resulted in a stillness that lasted for years. Only later did he realize how much anguish he had hidden away. Though he and Carter had always been close, sadness separated them in ways that words could hardly bridge.
Their mother frequently mentioned their father and the loss, but both he and Carter found it difficult to have such talks or relive the anguish. The celebrity acknowledged:
“The loss was so profound. I believed it was simpler to avoid it than to confront and reflect on it.”

Years later, Wyatt’s recollections reached him in a different way. During a frank appearance on “The Howard Stern Show,” he revealed that his father previously published a book named “Families,” which focused on their family.
Though it never became a success, he considered it as something far more personal: a message from father to son. He has read the book several times, characterizing it as his father’s voice, which remained to advise him even after Wyatt died.

Then, surprisingly, a radio personality reached out. The person interviewed Wyatt in 1976, about the time the book was published, and sent him the old recording. The singer became upset as he discussed hearing his father’s voice for the first time in decades.
“I heard my dad’s voice for the first time since I was 10 years old.”

Hearing the audio gave back more than just a voice; it restored a father’s hope. Wyatt talked about his hopes for both his younger child and Carter in the interview.

However, reality unfolded differently than Wyatt could have dreamed. Carter suffered for years following his death. At 23, not long after graduating from college, he felt adrift—dissatisfied at work and distraught after a relationship. Unsure about his next move, he returned to live with Gloria.
Then came the call. Carter’s mother called 19 days after he last saw his younger brother in 1988 with tragic news. “He had killed himself,” the celebrity said in a subsequent interview. “He’d jumped off the balcony of our apartment building — right in front of my mother.”

Carter’s death put the family in tremendous grief. Gloria subsequently stated that the agony almost compelled her to follow him. She remembered standing on the brink but stopping herself, stating it was her younger kid who prevented her from falling over.
The adoring parent spent years attempting to cope. Though life went on, she once said that it took “a very, very, very long time.”

Even with the passage of time, the weight of loss persisted. On the anniversary of Carter’s death, his younger brother paid tribute to him by uploading childhood images on social media.
In the caption, he wrote, “Today marks 35 years since my brother, Carter Cooper, died. I think about and miss him every day.” That silent anguish lingered with him for years.

During one interview, Anderson Cooper revealed what he had come to realize about both losses. “I realized that I had never truly mourned for my father or brother. “I just buried everything and moved on,” he said.
He felt compelled to help his mother through both sad times.
Only later did he realize how much anguish he had hidden away.

The agony of losing his loved ones persisted with him throughout time. In 2019, he had another tragedy when his mother, who had established a $100 million fashion company, died at the age of 95.
After years of putting his pain aside, he confronted it more openly in 2023. On his podcast, “All There Is With Anderson Cooper,” he discussed attempting to calm the “shadows of loss” that remained with him.
Having open interactions with people, including guests such as actress Molly Shannon, has given him comfort. While preparing for the second season, Anderson stated that these discussions had made him feel “less alone.”
The prominent figure reflected on his journey as he opened up about his sadness. While still in high school, he worked as a server, which was one of his first steps toward freedom.
Not long after Carter died, he sought Gloria for advice on what to do with his life. She instructed him, “Follow your bliss.” Although it seemed important, Anderson admitted:
“The problem [was], I didn’t know what [my bliss] was.”

At 17, unsure of what to do next, he dropped out of high school and embarked on a six-month truck voyage from South Africa to the Central African Republic. That event fueled a desire to go far from home.
His initial attempt to break into journalism did not proceed as expected. He was turned down by ABC News and temporarily worked as a researcher for Channel One, a youth-oriented network. Frustrated yet resolute, he devised his scheme.

“If no one’s going to give me a chance, I’m going to have to take a chance,” he said in an interview. He took a home video camera and went to battle zones on his own, believing that by going where few others ventured, he’d be able to find work in the field.
Anderson began in Southeast Asia, slipping across Thailand’s border to report on instability in Myanmar. The first tale altered everything. “Right after Burma, I realized this is what I wanted to do,” according to him. “I mean, being able to go places and tell people’s stories — it was perfect for me.”

Anderson has now established himself as a prominent television journalist and political pundit. He hosts “Anderson Cooper 360°” on CNN and contributes to “60 Minutes” on CBS News.
While the now-57-year-old discovered his calling in journalism early on, another aspect of his identity took longer to accept. He previously told “Full Circle” that he completely accepted being gay shortly after college, calling it “one of the blessings” in his life.

At the time, same-sex couples couldn’t marry, and homosexuality was still illegal in several areas of the world. Laws declaring homosexuality “incompatible with military service” prevented him from even considering joining the military.
He chose to come out of hiding around a year after graduation, claiming that it made him a better person and reporter. The journalist went on to say that being homosexual enables him to love unconditionally and enjoy a life he considered “very blessed.”

That feeling of self, once so hard-won, carried over into the next chapter of his life: parenthood. Anderson welcomed his first baby, Wyatt Morgan, in 2020 and named him after his father.
Gloria’s side of the family gave him the middle name Morgan, a choice both of his parents considered for him. He said the occasion made him “beyond happy.”

Anderson later welcomed a second baby, Sebastian Luke, who joined his elder brother Wyatt. He shares parental obligations with his close friend and previous partner, Benjamin Maisani.
Since becoming a father of two, the delighted dad has expressed his excitement. He referred to this era as the finest of his life, full of peaceful, hilarious, and emotionally significant moments that frequently caught him by surprise.
