Authorities disclose the cause of the ship ramming into the Brooklyn Bridge, leaving two dead

Authorities in New York have explained why a ship struck the Brooklyn Bridge this weekend, killing two people.

On Saturday, May 17, a Mexican naval training ship collided with the Brooklyn Bridge, killing 277 persons on board.

The ship’s masts collided with the bridge as it passed below, killing two people and injuring 19.

Authorities have now revealed the circumstances around the crash.

Wilson Aramboles, the chief of New York’s police, stated that the ship left a port in Manhattan with no intention of approaching the bridge. However, an early report stated that the spacecraft lost power owing to a mechanical failure.

The masts were too big to clear the Brooklyn Bridge, so they collapsed as the ship attempted to sail in reverse under it.

In a tweet, New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated, “Earlier tonight, the Mexican Navy tall ship Cuauhtémoc lost power and collided with the Brooklyn Bridge.”

At this point, 19 of the 277 passengers on board have been injured, two of them are in critical condition, and two more have died as a result of their injuries.

“We are praying for everyone on board and their families, and we are grateful to our first responders who acted fast to prevent this catastrophe from being much worse.

“Following our preliminary inspection, we can confirm that the bridge sustained no damage and is now open to the public.”

Meanwhile, Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, said, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of two crew members of the Cuauhtémoc Training Ship, who died in an unfortunate accident in New York Harbor.” Our condolences and support go to their families.

“The Navy, with the assistance of local authorities, is now treating the injured. The Mexican ambassador to the United States and officials from the Mexican Consulate General in New York are assisting the Navy.

“I want to congratulate New York Mayor Eric Adams for everything he has done for our fellow people. We are watching the situation, and the Navy will continue to give updates.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating exactly what happened.

Flavia Moreira, a witness who was walking along the promenade at the time of the collision, stated that the ship ‘kept getting closer’ before striking the bridge.

“But it just kept coming closer and closer to us, and at some point, I was like, I doubt that’s right,” Moreira told reporters on CNN. “A lot of people started filming, including me, because it was such a bizarre experience.

“We saw several individuals being pulled. Some individuals were on top of the boat, and I believe they were crew members. As soon as the ship struck the bridge, they began swinging back and forth.

“The ship was just so close to us, so we could see all those people really struggling to just, like, hold onto something to… not fall from the boat.”

A law enforcement official informed CNN that the two people who perished in the event had fallen from one of the masts.
