BE CAREFUL. Because of this insect bite, man lost his arms and part of his feet

In a tragic course of events, Michael Kohlhof of Texas lost both of his limbs and a portion of both of his feet as a result of a single flea bite. It all started when Michael went to an emergency room in San Antonio due to flu-like symptoms and a loss of feeling in his toes. He had no idea that he was going to experience a potentially fatal situation.

Michael was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) after rapidly deteriorating and entering septic shock. His organs were rapidly deteriorating within 24 hours, necessitating the use of a ventilator, dialysis, antibiotics, vasopressors, and several IV drugs to maintain his life.

His family was contacted to say their goodbyes as his condition deteriorated, out of concern that he would not survive. Greg, Michael’s brother, claimed that during this crucial time, Michael came close to passing away once or twice.

Michael somehow survived despite the severe circumstances, owing to 11 days of dedicated medical care. His hands and feet developed dry gangrene as a result of the vasopressor medication, necessitating several limb amputations by the time he was taken off the ventilator and put to sleep on July 1.

A single flea bite led to the development of an exceptionally uncommon form of typhus, which was ultimately responsible for Michael’s suffering. Doctors confirmed that this specific strain of typhus often develops in tropical and subtropical settings and is not prevalent in the United States. If neglected, flea-borne typhus can result in serious disease and damage to vital organs such as the liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, and brain.

Unfortunately, Michael didn’t show signs of gangrene until it was too late and he couldn’t be treated. To stop the illness from spreading further, his hands and part of his feet had to be amputated up to the forearms.

Michael’s family is positive about his future despite the tragic loss of his hands, which were essential to his passion as an art enthusiast, volunteer, handyman, and part-time pet caregiver. They think that despite the difficulties he now encounters, his fortitude and mental fortitude will enable him to discover new ways to follow his interests and enjoy a happy life.
