During their grandfather’s funeral on Saturday (6 April), the couple’s middle child introduced their new name while delivering a reading. Jennifer Garner’s father, William Garner, recently passed away at the age of 85, prompting the 13 Going On 30 star to pay tribute to him in a heartfelt Instagram post.

“My dad passed peacefully Saturday afternoon,” she wrote. “We were with him, singing Amazing Grace as he left us (did we carry him across or scare him away – valid question). While there is no tragedy in the death of an 85-year-old man who lived a healthy, wonderful life, I know grief is unavoidable, waiting around unexpected corners. Today is for gratitude.”

Garner expressed gratitude for her father’s gentle demeanor, quiet strength, mischievous teasing, and role as a devoted girl dad. She also appreciated his work ethic, leadership, and faith.

William’s memorial service at the Christ Church United Methodist in Charleston, West Virginia was live streamed on Facebook. During the service, Jennifer and Affleck’s child, who recently started using gender-neutral pronouns, stepped up to the podium and introduced themselves with their chosen name: “Hello, my name is Fin Affleck.”

Fin then proceeded to give a reading from Chapter 16 Verse 8 from the Book of Proverbs. Their siblings, Violet and Samuel, stood alongside them as they delivered the reading.

Each family member took turns reading from the Book of Proverbs, a favorite of their grandfathers.

Jennifer continued her tribute to her dad online, expressing gratitude to the medical professionals who cared for him during his passing. She extended her appreciation to the medical communities of Charleston Area Medical Center and City of Hope, acknowledging their role in extending her father’s life and allowing him to spend precious moments with his loved ones.
