Before the 2007 singles, Joel had temporarily retired from songwriting, focusing on covers instead. Reflecting on this decision in a 2018 interview, Joel explained that he stopped writing songs when he felt he couldn’t meet his own high standards. He admitted that drinking was a factor in his decision, as he used it to cope with the frustration of not achieving the level of excellence he desired.

Despite the hiatus from songwriting, Joel continued to perform live, showcasing his extensive catalog of hits, including classics like “Uptown Girl,” “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” and “Vienna.” Recently, he announced large stadium shows, some featuring co-headliners Stevie Nicks and Sting. Joel also revealed that his decade-long residency at Madison Square Garden in New York City will conclude in 2023 after his 150th show at the venue on July 25.
