Brad Pitt openly discusses his attendance at Alcoholics Anonymous during his split from Angelina Jolie. ‘I needed rebooting’

Brad Pitt is speaking up about his experience in Alcoholics Anonymous. The 61-year-old Oscar winner discussed the event on Monday’s episode of Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard. The two actors also discussed getting to know each other at an AA meeting.

Pitt described AA as an “amazing thing,” stating, “I found it incredible to see men sharing their experiences, foibles, missteps, wants, aches, and a lot of humor together.” “I thought it was a very special experience.”

Shepard, 50, has been quite open about his issues with substance addiction and sobriety and wondered if Pitt was “nervous” to speak with him publicly after they met in AA, noting the “really heightened honesty and vulnerability” of the scenario.

However, Pitt told him that he was “quite at ease.”

Pitt also stated that, while he was initially “shy” about joining the AA group, he did not hesitate to open up because of how low he was at the time.

“I was pretty much on my knees, and I was really open,” he informed her. “I tried everything and everyone. Anyone could throw anything at me. It was a difficult time. I needed a reboot. I needed to awaken certain aspects of my being. And it meant so much to me.”

In addition to calling himself a “stubborn f—,” Pitt mentioned some of his more favorable attributes.

“When I’ve walked in s—, I’m quite excellent at accepting responsibility and owning it. And now it’s a journey to figure out, “What am I going to do with this?” How can I correct this? And make certain that doesn’t happen again.”

Pitt stated that after several sessions, AA meetings were “something I’d look forward to.”

The Formula One driver said that he approached therapy with a similar openness, adding, “When I jumped into therapy then, I was just like, ‘And I did this and I did that and da da da da,'” calling his approach “desperate.”

“Yeah. You don’t come to AA because everything is going great,” Shepard acknowledged.

“No, that’s usually not the entry point,” Pitt joked in response.

“It’s not the winner’s club,” Shepard noted. “It’s not the winner’s club,” Shepard observed.

Pitt first opened up about his time in AA in a 2019 profile for the New York Times. He shared that he entered the program in 2016 after his ex, Angelina Jolie, first filed for divorce.

“It was actually really freeing to just expose the ugly sides of yourself,” he told the outlet of entering the program at the time. “There’s a great value in that.”
