Britney Spears’ husband, Asghari, confirmed that he filed for divorce in a statement posted to his Instagram Story

Britney Spears and her husband, Sam Asghari, have allegedly split after more than a year of marriage and seven years of dating. Before sources confirmed their breakup to PEOPLE, TMZ was the first to disclose it. Later, the publication said that Asghari filed for divorce from Spears on August 16. Spears has yet to respond directly to the accusations, but Asghari confirmed their breakup in an Instagram Story message.

In March, the model’s rep denied allegations of marital problems, claiming that Asghari was seen without his wedding band because he was filming a movie. He and Spears have failed to erase any of their Instagram posts with one another, with Asghari last appearing on her account in June.

The two initially met in 2016 when Asghari played the love interest in the Grammy winner’s “Slumber Party” music video. Soon after, they began dating and became Instagram-official on New Year’s Day. Spears stated in a 2017 radio interview that she made the initial move. “We were sitting there and waiting together for 20 minutes at a time, so we were basically forced to talk to each other,” she explained. “I discovered his phone number in my luggage. I said to myself, ‘He is pretty cute; this man is incredibly cute.’ So I phoned him, and he has been a really fun, amusing person ever since.”

Spears proposed to Asghari two months before her release from a 13-year conservatorship in November 2021. Asghari openly supported the singer during her years-long legal struggle to remove her former conservator, father Jamie Spears, and terminate the conservatorship, including wearing a #FreeBritney T-shirt before her explosive June 2021 court session.

Madonna, Paris Hilton, Selena Gomez, Drew Barrymore, and Donatella Versace were present when they exchanged vows in a private ceremony in Spears’ Los Angeles home in June 2022. “The ceremony was a dream, and the party was even better,” she said after the wedding on Instagram. “There were so many incredible people at our wedding that I’m still in shock!” I adore you, @SamAsghari!”
