Chaz Bono’s stunning companion is no mystery anymore and may appear familiar to you…

Chaz Bono has faced numerous challenges, and his upbringing as the child of renowned music singer and actress Cher hasn’t made things any simpler. He’s always been in the public eye, which can be challenging even under the best of circumstances.

Few stories are as inspiring as Chaz’s. He started his transition to masculinity in 2011, at the age of 39. Cher has always been supportive of her darling kid, even when things weren’t straightforward in the beginning.

Cher initially struggled with her son’s homosexuality. Chaz said she became “ballistic” when she found out.

Cher is likely well-known to most people. When I think of her, I can’t help but think about her incredible career. She started out with Sonny Bono, with whom she had both a fantastic and tumultuous relationship.

Cher dropped out of high school at age 16 and relocated to Los Angeles, where the pair first met. She attended acting school and worked to support herself. Boy, was she a talented vocalist?

Sonny, who was 11 years older, worked as an assistant for famed record producer Phil Spector. The duo quickly developed a rapport.

Bono worked for Cher as a backup session vocalist, appearing on several of Specter’s records. Cheer collaborated on several songs, including the Ronettes’ classic Be My Baby and the Righteous Brothers’ You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.

Sonny and Cher initially worked together on their respective albums in 1964. However, their initial singles failed to meet public expectations. This all changed in September 1964, with the publication of Baby Don’t Go.

Georgia Holt, Cher’s mother, had her brother Mickey hire the pair to open for the Righteous Brothers, initiating a lengthy and prosperous career that culminated in Cher earning the title “The Goddess of Pop.”

Baby Don’t Go became the duo’s first hit, marking the start of a hugely successful collaboration that lasted until the mid-1970s.

On a personal level, Cher and Sonny’s relationship got stronger.

Despite Cher’s initial interest in Bono, rumors circulated that he was more interested in one of her friends.

“I was with my girlfriend, who was really beautiful,” Cher explained. “He liked her, so he didn’t say much to me.” He said, ‘Oh yes, child.'”

She stated that “everyone just disappeared” when she first saw him, adding that “he was the most unusual person I’d ever seen.”

Cher and Bono soon started living together. They started a love connection, but it took a while to grow. Cher claims that Bono didn’t initially feel a physical attraction towards her. That soon changed, and the couple began dating seriously.

In 1965, the two married and began working on their professional music careers.

Most notably, the couple had a child together named Chaz Bono. He was born Chastity Bono on March 4, 1969. However, as a star youngster, he quickly rose to prominence, and TV viewers were soon able to enjoy his show.

Sonny produced the movie Chasity, which inspired the name Bono. Cher portrayed the primary part of a young, bisexual hippy runaway.

The concept of Chastity seems to have emerged during the filming process.

Chaz performed on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour several times as a youngster. He usually made an appearance at the end of each show when Sonny and Cher sang “I Got You Babe.”

In this way, Chaz became a known face to the American public.

Few people realized what he was going through at home and school. Early in life, Chaz struggled to connect with other women and their hobbies.

“I’d look at other girls my age and feel perplexed by their interest in fashion or which boy was the cutest,” Chaz told the Daily Mail in 2011.

Chaz revealed to both of her parents that she was a lesbian when she was 18.

“As a youngster, I always felt strange about myself. “I’d look at other girls my age and feel perplexed by their obvious interest in the latest fashion, which boy in class was the cutest, and who looked the most like cover girl Christie Brinkley,” Chaz wrote in his book Family Outing: A Guide to the Coming Out Process for Gays, Lesbians, and Their Families.”

“When I was 13, I finally had a word for how I was different.” I recognized I was gay.

It was not “easy” for Cher, who would later become an LGBTQ celebrity, to deal with her daughter’s coming out as a lesbian.

“When I found out Chaz was gay, I didn’t take it well,” Cher admitted in an interview with PrideSource.

But, according to Chaz himself, his mother “went ballistic” when he first came out to her.

Then, at 39, Chaz began his shift to male gender.

Chaz didn’t formally become a man until 2010, when a California court allowed his plea to change his gender and name.

The documentary Becoming Chaz, which premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and aired on the Oprah Winfrey Network, allowed audiences to watch Chaz’s transformation into a man.

“My mother went through some sort of grief stage. “It was difficult for her, and we didn’t see each other for about a year during my transition,” Chaz told SBS Australia.

Chaz himself said that his mother Cher had a difficult time at first.

The Oscar-winning actress and singer has always been a strong supporter of the LGBTQ community, but she admits it wasn’t always easy.

“It was very unlike me to have a problem with Chaz being gay, and it disappeared like that,” Cher told CNN in 2020, recalling her first response.

We debated whether Bono was transsexual for years. And he would respond, ‘No, I don’t want to [transition]. And then he said, ‘OK, I want to do this.'”

Cher recalls contacting Chaz and finding his previous voicemail message still on the phone. It was tough for her at first, but as the hours and days passed, she gradually realized that nothing could fundamentally change Bono.

“You don’t actually lose them. They just have a different shape,” she clarified.

Cher first encountered the gay community when she was nine years old.

“One day I came home and there were these two men in my living room with my mom and my aunt,” she remembers.

As they were fixing their hair and conversing, I couldn’t help but wonder, ‘Why haven’t we had these types of people around before?’ Because these dudes are the coolest.” That was my [introduction to] the gay world,” Cher stated, adding that “gay people don’t feel like they fit in, and I never did.”

Since the documentary debuted in 2011, Chaz has made multiple appearances in Hollywood. In the same year as the documentary’s publication, he became the first transgender guy to compete on Dancing with the Stars.

According to Advocate.com, it was the first time a transgender guy appeared on a major network television show for reasons unrelated to his gender identity.

Five years later, Chaz appeared in five episodes of American Horror Story: Roanoke and played Reverend Rydale on The Bold and the Beautiful.

Chaz has been working on his acting career while simultaneously dealing with weight issues.

For many years, Chaz struggled with weight and couldn’t flourish in his body. When he began his gender transition, it marked a watershed moment in his journey to a healthy life.

“I would never have been able to do it before,” he said to Oprah.

“I was too disconnected from my body, and the dysphoria I experienced with my body was too intense for me to care enough to take action.”

Chaz weighed 250 pounds when he initially went on Dancing With The Stars, but the competition and subsequent preparation caused him to drop weight swiftly. That is maybe not surprising given how much training and movement are necessary to excel on the dance floor.

However, it seems that Chaz continued to maintain his improved lifestyle even after the TV program ended. He has continued to drop weight, and recent photos reveal that he is no longer the unhealthy weight he was 10 years ago.

Unfortunately, Chaz’s weight reduction journey has not been totally pleasant. When you lose a lot of weight, it can be difficult for your body to maintain. As a result, Chaz exhibits significant drooping and excess skin.

“It wasn’t enjoyable, but it was worthwhile because my appearance has improved.” He said, “I’ve eliminated 99 percent of wheat from my diet.” I consume mostly veggies, meat, fruits, and nuts. “My birthday is the one day of the year when I’ll have cake,” Chaz told Extra TV.

His mother, Cher, has often complimented her son’s bravery and commitment to a better life.

“He did everything by himself.” He made up his own mind and acted on it. That weight was approximately 85 or 90 pounds. Wow! … I’m uncertain if I would possess the necessary courage. Cher stated this in 2013.

Chaz grew up in the spotlight, and his dating past has frequently sparked media interest. Jennifer Elia was Chaz’s relative many years ago. The pair had been dating since 1999, and Chaz proposed to Elia atop Seattle’s Space Needle.

However, their relationship was occasionally stormy. The pair went through a lot together; Jennifer Elia supported Chaz during his gender transition and subsequently stated that she felt her lover “more attractive” as a man.

However, things were not always easy. Elia admitted that dealing with Chaz’s adjustment was difficult at times. Elia confessed to resuming her drinking habits after Chaz revealed his ultimate plan to undergo gender reassignment.

The couple split in 2011.

“Chaz Bono and his fiancée, Jennifer Elia, have jointly announced that they have called off their engagement and are no longer a couple,” a representative stated at the time. The spokesperson continued: “They leave this relationship with great love, respect, and affection for one another.”

After a few years, Chaz discovered love again. In 2017, he began dating Shara Mathes, his current partner. Most people recognize Sarah Mathes, a former child artist and social worker, for her Hollywood appearances. She rose to fame after co-starring with Jason Bateman in the 1984 comedy series It’s Your Move.

The program ended in 1985, and Shara has since departed the entertainment world. According to the Daily Mail, she currently works for the homeless organization Housing Works in Los Angeles, California.

People believe that Chaz and Shara met through mutual acquaintances, and they undoubtedly share many similarities. However, there is limited information about the pair, and both Chaz and Shara seem to desire to maintain their relationship as discreet as possible. However, certain details have emerged in the tabloids. A source close to Chaz and Shara claimed, “Shara was newly single when she first met Chaz, and she wasn’t looking for love.”

According to the photographs released on social media, Chaz’s family has enthusiastically welcomed Shara.

Cher’s mother, Georgia Holt, welcomed Mathes to join the family for her 91st birthday festivities in June 2017.

In 2023, Chaz and Shara maintained a low profile about their romance on social media. Chaz’s latest post showcasing them together was in January, when the pair celebrated their sixth anniversary on January 20th. In his message, he expressed thanks, writing, “Shara and I celebrated our six-year anniversary together today. I am very thankful to have this wonderful woman in my life.”

Chaz Bono is such an encouragement to us all. His strength and tenacity in transformation are incredible. Most importantly, he followed his heart, regardless of what others believed.
