Classmates target a boy based on his pink T-shirt color. But when I saw his instructor the next day, my heart broke…

Bullying in schools denies many children their right to an education. Unfortunately, schools are not always able to prevent this type of violence, which occurs considerably more frequently than most people think.

Bullying, unfortunately, has long-term consequences that reduce the victim’s self-esteem.

William Gierke, 9, wanted to buy a pink T-shirt with the slogan “Tough Guys Wear Pink” written on it to raise awareness about breast cancer.

He was delighted to wear the T-shirt to school since he felt proud of it, and he wasn’t concerned about what his friends would think of him.

They started calling him disparaging names like “sissy” as soon as they discovered he was wearing pink.

William came home in tears, his heart broken. When his mother discovered that he was the target of bullying due to the color of his clothing, she was filled with outrage. It seemed horrible to witness her son choke on tears. The next day, he refused to go to school because he was so hurt.

Fortunately, his instructor was there to set things right, as his mother was unsure of how to assist him.

David Winter, William’s instructor, elected to stand up for him by wearing a pink T-shirt after learning about the bullying.

For William, his teacher’s show of support meant everything.

Following his teacher’s choice to face the bullies, William stated, “I feel more at ease; I no longer let it bother me.”

More educators like this one are required around the world. This world is a much better place because of deeds like theirs.
