Denzel Washington is not intimidated by cancel culture.
In an interview with Complex News, Washington was asked whether he considered being “canceled,” and he replied, “What does that mean—to be canceled?”
After being warned by interviewer Jillian Hardeman-Webb that “it means you lose public support,” Washington said, “Who cares?”
“What made public support so important to begin with?” he said, while promoting his current picture, Highest 2 Lowest, with regular collaborator and filmmaker Spike Lee.
Hardeman-Webb said that “followers now are currency”—but Washington remained unmoved.

“I don’t care who’s following whom,” stated the leader. “You can’t be both a leader and a follower at the same time. I don’t follow anyone. I follow the Holy Spirit. I obey God, not man. I have confidence in God. I have hope in man, yet look around; things aren’t going so well.”
Washington said he isn’t worried about being “followed,” adding, “You can’t be canceled if you haven’t signed up.” Do not sign up.
The Oscar winner proceeded to grin and extend his arms, telling Lee, “Don’t get me started. “You know, talking about it makes my chest tight.”
Lee expressed a similar sentiment, stating, “I don’t care.”
Taraji P. Henson reacted to a video snippet of the interview posted to Complex’s Instagram account, saying, “HE BETTER PREACH!!!! Humans have no control over my destiny. 🤷🏾♀️🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾. #GODIS, #MANAINTIT Have a wonderful day 💋💋💋.
Recently, Washington has demonstrated that he is unaffected by popular opinion.
During a recent interview with writer Jake Hamilton on Jake’s Takes, Washington admitted that he is not concerned about earning Academy Awards.
The actor stated that he does not prioritize such recognition, having been nominated for ten Academy Awards and won two throughout his decades-long career. “I don’t do it for the Oscars,” he explained. “I really don’t care about that kind of stuff.”
Washington went on, “I’ve been at this game for a long time, and there have been occasions when I should not have won, didn’t win, and should have won. A man presents the prize. God bestows the honor. I’m not very interested in Oscars. ‘Well, where do you keep it?’ I respond, ‘Next to the other one.’ ”
“I am not boasting. I’m simply expressing my feelings about it. “On my last day, it’s not going to do me any good,” he concluded.
The film Highest 2 Lowest is currently in theaters.
