The president has threatened to cancel a multibillion-dollar transaction if an NFL franchise does not alter its name.
US President Donald Trump has stated that he will halt the construction of a new $3.7 billion 65,000-seat stadium in Washington, owing to an apparent personal grudge over the team’s name change five years ago.
According to an agreement signed in April, the new site will replace the existing RFK (Robert F. Kennedy) stadium, which housed the club from 1961 until 1997.
The football club has lived in Landover, Maryland, since leaving the historic stadium over three decades ago, but has long sought to return to Washington, D.C., with high aspirations of relocating to the new purpose-built facility by 2030.
However, the president’s stance on the ‘controversial’ name change may dampen aspirations for the Washington Commanders to return home.
The NFL club dropped the moniker Redskins in July 2020 after an investigation determined that it was discriminatory and hurtful to Native Americans.
The squad was later known as the Washington Football squad until being renamed the Commanders in 2022.
Last Monday, Republican legislator James Comer urged the District of Columbia Council to expedite the approval of stadium designs.

The chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform stated in a statement that the committee ‘expects a prompt vote without unnecessary and politically motivated delays,’ adding that “further delays can threaten the largest private investment in D.C. history and be considered clear disregard for congressional intent.”
However, Trump has vowed to intervene in the case, explaining his plan to cancel the contract unless the club reverts to its previous name, calling the designation ‘stupid.’
On Sunday (July 20), the President wrote on his platform, Truth Social: “I may impose a condition on them that if they do not change the name back to the original Washington Redskins and get rid of the ridiculous moniker Washington Commanders, I will not make a deal for them to build a stadium in Washington.
“The team would be much more valuable, and the deal would be more exciting for everyone.”
In a subsequent post, Trump asked the Cleveland Guardians baseball club to restore its previous name, Indians.
“The Washington ‘Whatevers’ should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team,” he wrote during his tirade.
“There is a huge need for this. Likewise, the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball clubs, has a rich history.

“Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen.” Their tradition and reputation are gradually being taken away from them. Times have changed since three or four years ago.
“We are a country that values passion and common sense. “Owners, get it done!!!”
However, managing partner Josh Harris ruled out the possibility of a name change, declaring in February of this year that Commanders is here to stay.
“Now, in this building, the name Commanders means something.” It’s about football players that love the game, are brilliant at it, hit hard, are psychologically strong, and make excellent teammates. That name must be gaining meaning.”
Chris Antonetti, president of baseball operations for the Cleveland Guardians, responded directly to Trump’s statement Wednesday, saying, “We recognize there are various viewpoints on the choice we took a few years ago, but obviously, it was a decision we made.
“We’ve got the opportunity to build a brand as the Guardians over the last four years and are excited about the future that’s in front of us.”
