In a recent appearance on The Joe Budden Podcast, motivational speaker Dr. Umar Johnson shared his perspective on Eminem’s status in rap, asserting that Eminem “can’t be considered the GOAT of rap” due to his race. Dr. Umar argued that Eminem, as a white artist, benefits from both white privilege and the hip-hop community’s acceptance, cautioning against allowing non-Africans into the hip-hop community.

Joe Budden, a rapper and podcast host, challenged this view, asking Dr. Umar if he didn’t think Eminem was one of the greatest rappers of all time, to which Dr. Umar responded, “According to who?” Budden suggested, “According to rap fans?” Dr. Umar went on to express his belief that placing Eminem at the top of the list is a manifestation of white supremacy, stating that “no non-African can ever be the best of anything African” and deeming it an insult to the ancestors and the race.
Dr. Umar continued by drawing an analogy, stating that he could never go to Palestine or Israel and be the best at anything in their culture, emphasizing the need to stop naming non-African people as the best in any aspect of African culture. While one of Budden’s co-stars acknowledged Eminem’s talent, this perspective aligns with similar claims made by others in the industry, questioning whether Eminem’s success would be the same if he were Black.

Eminem himself has acknowledged his status as a guest in hip-hop culture, recognizing that he is absolutely a guest and has never claimed to be king of anything. This ongoing conversation reflects the complexities surrounding race, privilege, and recognition within the realm of music and culture.
Dr. Umar says Eminem is not one of greatest rappers of all time because he’s not African.
