Drew Barrymore responds to allegations that she hoped her mother was dead. Here’s why…

Drew Barrymore has lambasted news agencies for misinterpreting an interview she gave as implying she wished her mother had died.

On Monday, many newspapers reprinted comments from a New York Magazine interview in which Barrymore detailed her troubled relationship with her mother, Jaid Barrymore.

Barrymore stated that she has found it more difficult to comprehend her relationship dynamics with her mother than other celebrities, such as Jennette McCurdy and Brooke Shields, who have had similarly problematic relationships with their parents and have gone on Barrymore’s talk show to discuss the matter.

“All their mothers are gone, but my mother is still alive,” Barrymore said. “And I’m like, ‘Well, I don’t have that luxury,'” she says. But I simply cannot wait. I don’t want to be in a position where I wish someone would go sooner than they should in order for me to progress. I genuinely want her to be happy, to prosper, and to be healthy. But I have to fucking grow regardless of her being in this world.”

After the remarks were misinterpreted as Barrymore wishing her mother was dead, the actor and talk show host replied with an Instagram video.

“I’ve never stated I wished my mom had died. In the video, Barrymore says, “How dare you put those words in my mouth?” “I have been vulnerable and tried to figure out a very difficult and painful relationship while admitting it is difficult to do while a parent is still alive.”

Barrymore went on to say that her statements had been misinterpreted.

“And those of us who have to figure that out in real time cannot wait, as in, they cannot wait for the time,” she explained. “Not that the parent is no longer alive. Never distort my words or claim that I wish my mom was dead. That is something I have never stated. I’d never do it.”

“In fact, I go on to say that I wish I never had to live in a world where I would wish that on someone because that is sick,” Barrymore said, pointing to another passage in the interview in which she expressed sorrow forever considering her mother’s death.

Barrymore has had a tough connection with her mother since infancy, and despite emancipating from her parents at the age of 14, the “Charlie’s Angels” star still financially supports her mother.
