Dutch Colonial house in Lincoln, Kansas, underwent transformation into “forever home,” involving $95,000 investment

A Dutch colonial house in Lincoln, Kansas, became a dream “forever home” for Julie and Eddie Flores after they received it for free. The aging house, though initially appearing rundown with peeling paint and a damaged porch, revealed hidden treasures such as beautiful hardwood floors and a charming staircase once the couple stepped inside.

Despite being content in Kansas City, the allure of the Lincoln house proved irresistible to the Flores family. Concerned that the historical home might be demolished if not claimed, they took swift action. The Lincoln County Hospital & Healthcare Foundation offered the house at no cost to anyone willing to relocate it, and the Flores family eagerly applied and were selected.

With legal ownership documentation in hand, obtained without any monetary exchange, the couple embarked on a renovation journey. Their commitment to restoring rather than discarding aligns with their belief in preserving and appreciating the past. Throughout the process, they shared their progress on social media to inspire others.

Renovations included fixing the roof, removing porches, and sealing openings to safeguard the house during relocation. The couple encountered challenges like pests and building a new basement, and successfully navigated the intricate task of moving the house to its new location.

Currently, the Flores family is diligently working to complete renovations while managing family life and Eddie’s role as a nurse.

The project has incurred approximately $95,000 in expenses, and the family aims to move into their revitalized home by Thanksgiving. Additionally, they are supporting their community by hiring local businesses for various tasks, contributing to the growth and revitalization of Lincoln.
