Elton John has returned to the red carpet for the first time since disclosing that he has “been dealing with a severe eye infection” that has impaired his eyesight.
On Friday, September 6, only days after sharing the health news with fans, the music superstar, 77, walked the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival alongside husband David Furnish.
The longtime pair chose complementary ensembles to celebrate the international premiere of John’s documentary Elton John: Never Too Late, with the singer layering shades of dark maroon, including his distinctive sunglasses, and co-director Furnish, 61, donning a plum tux.
John initially provided an update on his health three days before his TIFF appearance.
The “Tiny Dancer” singer shared the news in an Instagram post on September 3, explaining that he now has “limited vision” but assuring fans that he is doing well throughout his recuperation.
“Over the summer, I’ve been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye,” he wrote at the time. “I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process, and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye.”
The five-time Grammy winner said he is “so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses, as well as my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks.”
“I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery thus far,” he told me.
The “Rocket Man” singer attended TIFF to celebrate the debut of the career-spanning documentary Never Too Late, co-directed by Furnish and R.J. Cutler.
From his landmark 1974 Madison Square Garden performance until his final appearance at Dodger Stadium in 2022, the film follows John as he reflects on the beginnings of his decades-long career while preparing to deliver his final North American act.
Within the documentary, “Elton takes us back in time and recounts the extraordinary highs and heartbreaking lows of his early years and how he overcame adversity, abuse, and addiction to become the icon he is today,” according to a news release.
