Alex Salmond, the former First Minister of Scotland, died at the age of 69.
Scottish channel STV first reported the story earlier today (12 October), and X confirmed it.
Specifics of the former SNP leader’s death are yet unknown; however, it is believed that he was lecturing in North Macedonia earlier today and fell afterward.

Generally recognized as a significant figure in Scottish politics, Salmond served as the country’s First Minister from 2007 to 2014. Nicola Sturgeon succeeded him as the leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) from 2004 to 2004.
Alex Salmond was a huge figure in our politics. While I disagreed with him on the constitutional question, there was no denying his skill in debate or his passion for politics. May he rest in peace.

He was also prominent in Scotland’s independence referendum, and the country’s choice to stay in the United Kingdom resulted in his departure as First Minister.

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar called the 69-year-old ‘a major player in politics’ in a statement on X, while former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak added, ‘Alex Salmond was a huge figure in our politics.’ While I disagreed with him on the constitutional issue, there was no questioning his debating ability or enthusiasm for politics. “May he rest peacefully.”
