Meryl Streep and Martin Short will remain close at the 2024 Emmy Awards.
Streep, 75, sat at her longtime friend Short’s side at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 15, for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, where the pair’s program Only Murders in the Building got nominations in eight categories.

The pair’s appearance at the annual awards event comes months after Short, 74,’s agents denied reports about his connection with Streep after the two seemed especially close at the 2024 Golden Globes in January.
At the time, Short’s representative told PEOPLE that the two are “just very good friends, nothing more.” Short later refuted the claims on Bill Maher’s show that same month, saying the two co-stars are “not a couple; we are just very close friends.”

In May, Short addressed the curiosity in his connection with Streep, who PEOPLE announced in October had divorced from her husband of 45 years, Don Gummer, six years earlier, saying, “It’s always intriguing. Show business contacts and specifications.”

On Sunday, Short and his Only Murders co-star Steve Martin received nominations for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series. For her role in the series, Streep received a nomination in the supporting actress category; other nominees from the popular Hulu series included Selena Gomez, Paul Rudd, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Matthew Broderick.
Despite Streep and Short’s denial of a romantic relationship, they held hands at the season 4 premiere afterparty in Los Angeles on August 22. Even yet, a source told PEOPLE that the two are “just friends.”

On the same day, The Hollywood Reporter released an interview with Short in which he indicated that he and Streep are “friends” when questioned about the status of their relationship.
