Former American Idol contestant and Grammy Award-winning recording artist Mandisa has died at the age of 47

Today (April 19), the official Facebook page of Mandisa confirmed the heartbreaking news of her passing. The singer, known in full as Mandisa Lynn Hundley, was discovered deceased in her home on Thursday (April 18).

Mandisa initially gained prominence after her audition for the fifth season of American Idol, where she received accolades from judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson. Throughout her time on the show in 2006, Mandisa delivered captivating performances of songs such as Chaka Khan’s ‘I’m Every Woman’ and Stevie Wonder’s ‘Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing’.

Although her journey on American Idol concluded when she was eliminated in the top nine, Mandisa’s career was just beginning. In 2007, she released her debut album, True Beauty, and later received a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album for her work on Overcomer, released six years later.

Despite her professional success, Mandisa openly shared her struggles with mental health in her 2022 memoir, Out of the Dark: My Journey Through the Shadows to Find God’s Joy. She candidly discussed battling depression, anxiety, and isolation, recounting how she sought solace in food during difficult times.

In a 2017 interview with People magazine, Mandisa revealed the extent of her struggles, admitting to rarely leaving her home and relying on food delivery services for sustenance.

The statement announcing Mandisa’s passing did not disclose the cause, stating it to be currently unknown. It requested prayers for her family and close friends during this challenging period.

Tributes poured in for Mandisa, with fans honoring her as “a beautiful and talented soul” whose music provided solace during their own struggles.
