Friends’ director reveals that he had the most difficulty working with the guest star because of her perceived lack of humor

If you’re a fan of the iconic television show Friends, you might be surprised to learn a little-known secret from behind the scenes that may shock you. Or perhaps not, considering the character in question wasn’t exactly a fan favorite.

According to a director of Friends, there was a particular guest star he found challenging to work with because they simply ‘lacked humor’. Could he BE any more judgmental?

Fans of the ’90s sitcom are well aware of the plethora of famous guest stars who made memorable cameo appearances during its decade-long run. From the likes of the eccentric Ben Stiller to the rumor-spreading Brad Pitt, as well as Robin Williams and the emotional Bruce Willis, each guest star left their own unique mark on the show.

However, according to director James Burrows, it was guest star Helen Baxendale who proved to be the most difficult to work with due to her perceived lack of comedic flair.

For those unfamiliar, Baxendale portrayed one of Ross Geller’s (David Schwimmer) many girlfriends, Emily Waltham. Her character’s romance with Ross was short-lived due to Ross accidentally saying Rachel’s name (played by Jennifer Aniston) at the altar during their wedding in London—an unforgettable moment that still makes viewers cringe over two decades later.

While Baxendale’s brief stint on Friends was primarily due to her pregnancy, Burrows revealed the challenges the other actors faced in engaging with her on set.

In his memoir, “Directed by James Burrows,” Burrows recalled the difficulties encountered during the episode ‘The One with All the Rugby’: “She was nice but not particularly funny. Schwimmer had no one to bounce off. It was like clapping with one hand.”

Burrows elaborated, emphasizing the importance of humor and chemistry in sitcoms and romantic comedies alike. He noted that any new girlfriend for Ross needed to possess the same comedic prowess as Rachel.

Baxendale herself has spoken about her time on the show, describing it as a ‘surreal little blip’ in her life. While she praised the professionalism of the cast, she admitted they were not particularly close, contrary to the expectation set by the show’s title.

In retrospect, Baxendale reflected fondly on her time on Friends, recognizing it as a unique experience in her career.
