From old Belgian water tank to dream tower house with a view

Architect Patrick Mets harbored a lifelong fascination with old industrial buildings, particularly water towers. His childhood dream of living in such a tower became a reality years later. Patrick and partner Valérie Lecherf scoured the Belgian countryside for 18 months on a motorbike, seeking the perfect water tower to convert into a unique family home.

The quest led them to a dilapidated, abandoned tower near Brussels, surrounded by picturesque Belgian countryside and just a stone’s throw from the airport.

Despite its charming location, the tower required a thorough examination to determine if it was habitable. Abandoned for 10-15 years, the exterior seemed sound, but the interior’s cement and metal had corroded.

Patrick purchased the tower for $43,000 but faced permit challenges from the city before commencing renovations. Undeterred, he persisted, obtaining permission after seven years and completing the $2.1 million renovation in 2009. Christened “Chateau d’eau” (water castle), the home retained the original water tank, now painted black, to preserve its unique character.

Collaborating with designer Mauro Brigham (NC & Bham), Patrick created a sleek, modern aesthetic with a water theme. The living area occupies the original water tank, offering a 360-degree view of the European countryside. Black-painted original pipes and tanks accentuate the tower’s authenticity.

The multi-level tower features a technical room, storage and utility room, two bedrooms, and a versatile multi-functional space.

The third level stands out as the pièce de résistance, serving as an impressive bathroom with a central 4.5-meter rainforest-style shower and a rooftop patio, perfect for sunbathing.

Standing at 90 feet, the water tower became a beloved landmark in the village. Patrick and Valérie resided there for four years before moving closer to their daughters’ school.

Despite the move, the tower continues to attract attention, rented out for corporate events and special occasions. A testament to childhood dreams, this unique home showcases Patrick’s architectural vision and determination.
