Gary Sinise, renowned for his roles in film and TV, particularly as Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump, is not only celebrated for his on-screen performances but also for his significant philanthropic efforts. At 68, he has garnered multiple awards for his humanitarian work and charity involvement, with the establishment of his own foundation, the Gary Sinise Foundation.
In 2017, Gary’s son, Mac, became part of this foundation, contributing to his father’s band, the Lt. Dan Band, known for performing for military servicemen and women. Tragically, Mac passed away, and the foundation shared a heartfelt tribute penned by Gary, acknowledging Mac’s impactful journey with the organization and his battle with cancer.

The challenging year of 2018 brought further sorrow to the Sinise family. Gary’s wife, Moira, was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer during the summer, while on August 8, Mac received a diagnosis of a rare cancer known as Chordoma. Although Moira successfully went into remission, Mac’s health declined.
Despite his health struggles, Mac continued to contribute to the foundation, participating in its podcast and offering insights whenever possible. Gary explained the rarity of Chordoma, affecting around 300 people annually in the U.S., with only 30% of cases experiencing a recurrence.

Sharing their journey, Gary emphasized the crucial support they received from the Chordoma Foundation, the sole organization dedicated to finding a cure for this rare cancer. Mac, unfortunately, succumbed to cancer at the age of 33 on January 5, 2023, and was laid to rest on January 23.
Gary expressed the profound difficulty of losing a child, stating that the family’s cancer battle spanned 5 ½ years and became increasingly challenging. Despite the heartache, they find solace in knowing that Mac is no longer in pain, and they are inspired by his resilience throughout the ordeal.
