George Stanford Brown and Tyne Daly had a long-lasting intercultural marriage against prejudice

Hollywood actors Georg Stanford Brown and Tyne Daly defied societal norms when they fell in love in the 1960s, a time when interracial relationships faced significant challenges and legal barriers.

Georg Stanford Brown’s journey began in Havana, moving to Harlem at the age of 7 and later settling in LA at 17 to pursue education in theater arts. Initially, he chose theater arts on a whim, eventually discovering his passion. He furthered his studies at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York, working as a janitor to support himself.

While at the academy, Brown met Tyne Daly, an accomplished actress known for her role as Mary Beth Lacey in the popular show “Cagney and Lacey.” The couple faced racial prejudice when they got married on June 1, 1966, just a year before interracial marriage became legal nationwide.

Georg Stanford Brown gained fame for his role as Officer Terry Webster on the ABC TV show “The Rookies,” which aired from 1972 to 1976. Additionally, he played Tom Harvey in the mini-series “Roots” and took on diverse roles in films like “The Comedians” and “Bullitt.” In 1984, he starred as Lew Gilbert in “The Jesse Owens Story.”

Tyne Daly, already known for her successful acting career, stood her ground alongside Brown, facing network censors when they shared the first on-screen interracial kiss on an episode of “The Rookies.” Despite challenges, they aired the segment without compromise.

The couple, known for their resilience, had three daughters: Alisabeth Brown, Kathryne Dora Brown, and Alyxandra Beatris Brown. Tyne Daly expressed a rejection of racial categorization, describing her marriage as a union between two members of the human race.

In 1986, Georg Stanford Brown transitioned into directing, winning a Primetime Emmy Award for Best Director in a Drama Series for the final episode of “Cagney & Lacey.” Meanwhile, Tyne Daly continued her acting career, featuring in notable Broadway shows.

Despite their successful careers and lasting over two decades together, the couple filed for divorce in 1990 due to unresolved differences. Despite the end of their marriage, the enduring love and determination displayed by Georg Stanford Brown and Tyne Daly remain an inspiring testament to overcoming prejudice and societal challenges.
