When someone deviates from the script during their wedding ceremony, it is usually a bad thing. But that was all part of Dontez Williams’ plan to give his soon-to-be wife and stepdaughters the finest surprise ever!

Dontez and Myshella Burton met roughly seven years ago on the dating site Plenty of Fish. Myshella’s two children, Abigail and Natalie, were just one and two years old.

Dontez has always treated the girls as if they were his children because they are so young. That’s why, when Abigail and Natalie were finally able to marry in 2021, Dontez felt he wanted to do something extra special for them. After considerable thought, he came up with the perfect solution: an adoption proposal.

The father didn’t want to just ask Abigail and Natalie whether he could adopt them; he wanted it to be extra spectacular and completely unexpected—and he totally delivered!

First, Dontez discussed the idea with his coworkers, who agreed that his proposal was ideal. He then surreptitiously drafted vows for 9-year-old Abigail and 8-year-old Natalie, which he read aloud at the ceremony. Finally, he kept his plans a secret until the wedding rehearsal. However, he only informed the officiant shortly before the ceremony.

“Just the thought of me writing the vows for them made me want to tear up,” he recalled. “When I felt that sensation just thinking about it, I said, ‘I have to do this. This is the correct decision.” There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it.”

As Dontez began to deviate from the script throughout the ceremony, the wedding party became noticeably puzzled. That perplexity gradually became an emotional reality! “Myshella was really shocked, but she was happy and just thankful for me stepping up,” Dontez recalls. “She was really happy that I feel that way for them and said she’s grateful to have me in their lives.”

In his heartfelt statement, Dontez recounted his initial meeting with Abigail and Natalie before going on to explain how they had positively impacted his life.

“I never knew you really do become a man when you have children,” he told me. “Having someone to teach, protect, and provide for them; discipline them; learn from them; and encourage them. For all of these reasons, you have contributed to my personal growth. I understand that I’m a father figure to both of you.”

As Dontez continued to speak, the girls realized what he was doing. One of them was crying before he could even ask the question. When he went down on one knee to officially ask whether he could adopt them, his lovely girls were already saying “yes” and holding him as firmly as they could.

“Although they are not biologically mine, blood could not make us any closer,” the man stated.
