He buys $2 photo, which turns into a million-dollar find…

Randy Guijarro stumbled upon a valuable photograph of Billy the Kid engaged in a game of croquet at a thrift shop. Originally valued at $2, the picture has since fetched millions, with Guijarro and his wife planning to use the proceeds for further explorations and possibly a new car.

A telecommunications expert, Guijarro made the purchase in 2010 in Fresno. The photograph, captured in 1878, portrayed Billy the Kid and his gang playing croquet, and Guijarro later discovered its historical significance and authenticity.

The photograph, now appraised at $5 million, stands as the second authenticated image of Billy the Kid. A National Geographic special, hosted by Kevin Costner, delved into the extensive five-year research that underpinned its authentication.

Guijarro, at 54, described the journey as arduous, marked by false leads and mistrust. He expresses the hope that the journey of discovery remains filled with pleasant surprises.

Billy the Kid, a legendary figure of the Wild West, gained notoriety for his brief outlaw career, with some historians attributing nine homicides to him. Another known portrait of him fetched $2.3 million in 2011.

As a collector, Guijarro stumbled upon the photo while perusing an antique store in Fresno, acquiring three pictures for a mere $2. Among them, the croquet photo turned out to be a valuable find.

Despite their prudent plans for the funds, Guijarro stresses caution, emphasizing that they’re not counting their chickens before they hatch. Their intentions include purchasing a new car, settling debts, assisting friends and family, and continuing their treasure hunts. Guijarro clarifies that they are not hoarders, typically opting to sell what they acquire.

Ultimately, Guijarro and his wife derive joy from exploring and uncovering hidden treasures, always prepared for the next exciting adventure.
