Here’s interesting way to avoid having entry rug

Frustrated by their cat Lucky consistently damaging entry rugs, the author undertook a project to replace the laminate flooring beneath the affected mat with hexagon tiles. Despite the mat’s rubbery and patterned composition, the cat managed to soil it, raising concerns about the condition of the subfloor.

The decision was made to use hexagon tiles, similar to those in their kitchen, to craft a resilient and visually appealing entry. With the plan in mind, the old flooring was cut out along the traced line, preparing the area for the installation of new tiles.

To address potential moisture issues, waterproofing was applied using Schluter Kerdi membrane and AquaDefense liquid membrane. The tiles were then laid using rapid-setting thin-set mortar, and after they set, the author proceeded to grout. The process of mixing and applying the grout was shared, with a focus on the importance of exercising patience.

The exterior gaps between the tiles and other flooring were intentionally left for caulking, providing flexibility for any shifts in the flooring. While grouting can be a messy process, it is a crucial step in the overall project. Using baby wipes to remove the grout film from the tiles proved to be helpful.

The final step involved caulking the edges, adding a polished finish to the project. The caulk not only concealed any irregular cuts but also contributed to a seamless appearance. The completed floor not only addressed the cat-related challenges but also transformed the entryway into a practical and visually appealing space capable of withstanding wet and muddy shoes.

While the project originated out of necessity, it successfully turned a previously damaged floor into a functional and aesthetically pleasing area.
